Chapter 9
Contains spoilersOverview
With Nina out at a PTA dinner, Millie cooks for Andrew and Cecelia and finds the house noticeably calmer. Cecelia rejects steak, leading Andrew to coach Millie on the girl’s strict dinosaur-shaped chicken nugget requirements. Millie, attracted but cautious, maintains professional boundaries and declines to dine with them to avoid provoking Nina.
Summary
Nina attends a PTA meeting and dinner, leaving Millie to prepare a quiet household meal for Andrew and Cecelia. Millie cooks filet mignon with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Andrew arrives as the steaks rest and compliments the food, then calls Cecelia downstairs when she ignores Millie.
Cecelia appears in a fancy dress, demands apple juice instead of water, and rejects the first glass as smudged, which Millie replaces without protest. Andrew joins them as Millie privately reflects on her complicated feelings about men after prison and her attraction to Andrew, resolving not to act on it.
At the table, Andrew praises the steak, but Cecelia refuses it. Seeing the impasse, Andrew takes over and demonstrates Cecelia’s precise chicken nugget standards: a specific brand, dinosaur shapes without defects, exactly five pieces, microwaved for ninety seconds. They share light banter about the expensive kitchen versus microwave dinners.
Andrew invites Millie to join them, but she declines to avoid upsetting Nina and to maintain boundaries. He accepts her decision. Andrew returns to the dining room with nuggets for Cecelia, while Millie eats the rejected steak at the sink and retreats to her room, noting how peaceful the house is without Nina.
