Contains spoilersOverview
Millie wakes to Nina and Andrew’s explosive fight about infertility, punctuated by crashes. Nina appears with a bloody hand, claims it’s a cut, and Andrew is heard in the bathroom, alive. Nina threatens Millie’s job and orders her to remain in the attic, escalating control and danger.
Summary
Awakened by shouting, Millie tests her sticking attic door, slips out, and follows the noise to the master bedroom. From the hallway, she hears Nina angrily blaming herself for their infertility and accusing Andrew of wishing she were gone. Multiple crashes from the room heighten Millie’s alarm.
Nina yanks the door open wearing a white nightgown streaked with fresh blood, her right hand also smeared crimson. Millie fears Andrew is hurt or dead and presses to know his condition. A bathroom faucet turns on, confirming Andrew is alive and nearby.
Nina coolly dismisses Millie’s concern, claims she just cut her hand, and revels in intimidating her. When Millie doesn’t immediately retreat, Nina threatens to fire her, forcing Millie to back down.
As Millie withdraws, Nina calls after her and lays down a new rule: Millie must stay in the attic at night. Millie, rattled by the blood, the fight, and Nina’s menace, resolves not to leave the attic again after dark.
