Chapter 3
Contains spoilersOverview
Millie begins work at the Winchesters’ mansion and immediately encounters unsettling signs. She meets Andrew and the landscaper Enzo, who warns her of danger. Nina’s generosity and warmth flip to suspicion, and Millie’s attic room locks from the outside with a sealed window and scratch marks, signaling potential entrapment.
Summary
Millie arrives at the gated Winchester home for her first day. After the gate won’t open, the landscaper, Enzo, lets her in and carries her bags. He speaks little English and whispers an Italian word—pericolo—before retreating when the front door opens.
Nina greets Millie warmly, but the immaculate home from the interview is now a mess. Nina gifts Millie a new iPhone for communication. Andrew Winchester comes downstairs, surprised to see Millie but welcoming; Nina shows flashes of jealousy and questions Millie about the glasses she wore at the interview, prompting Millie to claim she’s wearing contacts.
Nina leads Millie to her attic room, which has basic furnishings and a mini-fridge. Millie notices the doorknob locks from the outside. Nina explains the room used to be a closet and promises a key, though she doesn’t know where it is. Millie spots long scratch marks on the inside of the door.
Overheated and uneasy, Millie tries to open the small window, but it has been painted shut. Outside, Enzo sees her and shakes his head. Using the new phone, Millie translates pericolo and learns it means “danger,” sharpening her fears about the room and the household.
