Chapter 41
Contains spoilersOverview
Nina completes Andrew’s coerced task but is kept another night without water when he claims a hair lacks a follicle. By morning he accepts her second attempt, offers minimal relief, and poses as caretaker. The chapter deepens Andrew’s control and gaslighting and hardens Nina’s resolve to protect Cecelia.
Summary
Nina spends the day extracting one hundred hairs with follicles to satisfy Andrew’s demand. At seven o’clock, she passes the envelope under the door, but Andrew claims one strand lacks a follicle, refuses release, and leaves, denying her food and water.
Through the night, weak with thirst and hunger, Nina plucks additional strands and prepares a second envelope. She dreams of unreachable water and fears dying, determined to survive for Cecelia.
In the morning, after dizziness and a moment of near-blackout, Nina delivers the new envelope. Andrew counts, accepts, unlocks the door, and brings her a large glass of water and a bagel. She consumes them despite hatred, while he frames the ordeal as necessary for her to learn.
Too weak to walk, Nina lets Andrew help her downstairs, hearing Cecelia singing and confirming the child seems unharmed. Andrew insists she lie down and tucks her into bed, soothing and gaslighting her about her condition as Nina silently resolves not to let him have another chance.
