Chapter 95

Overview

Adolin begins adjusting to the loss of his foot just as Azir’s military situation becomes nearly hopeless, forcing him to confront both his helplessness and the empire’s different ideas about duty, punishment, and loyalty. Through Yanagawn, Gezamal, and Colot, the chapter shows how people keep serving causes that wound them anyway.

At the same time, Szeth learns the true goal of his pilgrimage: he is being prepared to become a new Herald and help patch the unraveling Oathpact after Jezrien’s death. Though the revelation terrifies him and even his highspren lacks answers, Szeth accepts the burden because the alternative may doom millions.

Summary

As Azir’s defenses continue to crumble, Adolin is finally fitted with a peg leg after losing his foot beneath the thunderclast. The surgeon warns that balance will take time to relearn and that Adolin may never be fit for combat again, which forces Adolin to confront both his anger and the humiliating possibility that others must fight in his place. He studies reports showing the defenders are exhausted, dangerously undermanned, and reduced to holding the dome with thin shield lines while waiting for Dalinar’s coming contest.

Back in the imperial tent, Adolin resumes his nightly strategy game with Yanagawn. Adolin uses the game to keep teaching the emperor tactics, but their conversation turns to Gezamal, the guard officer punished for obeying Yanagawn’s wish to enter battle. Adolin argues that punishing a soldier for a correct judgment destroys initiative and good leadership, while Yanagawn insists that a civilized society must accept consequences even when an action was morally justified.

Elsewhere that night in Shinovar, Szeth speaks with his highspren beside the dying campfire while Kaladin’s flute music drifts nearby. The spren confirms that the pilgrimage’s true purpose is to make Szeth a new Herald and repair the weakening Oathpact after Jezrien’s death. Szeth learns that Nale chose him for his obedience, skill, and lack of attachments; that the necessary Words cannot simply be taught; and that Ishar believes reforging the pact could spare millions. Horrified by the eternal burden but seeing no real alternative, Szeth agrees to do it.

The spren also admits uncertainty. It cannot answer why Shinovar’s Unmade has been left in place, why the Heralds have not already cleansed the land, or how Ishar’s plans for physical spren bodies would protect them from torture. That confession leaves Szeth with even less confidence in the people guiding him, but Kaladin’s music briefly steadies him as he accepts that peace may never be meant for him.

Later, Adolin walks across the courtyard with Colot and Notum, testing the peg leg while hearing that casualties and morale are both worsening. He finds Gezamal demoted to infantry labor and tries to recruit him, but Gezamal refuses. Gezamal explains that he loves the Azish Empire despite its flaws, and that accepting punishment with dignity is itself a sign of loyalty to the system he serves. On the way back, Colot compares that painful loyalty to his own rejection by the Windrunners, and Adolin is left balancing on his new leg with the conviction that Azir probably cannot survive the remaining day and a half.
