Shallan enters another imposed vision, but this time she refuses to be thrust directly into her most painful memory. By asserting her will, Shallan starts earlier and relives the morning of her wedding to Adolin. The memory begins with royal attendants preparing her and with Kaladin’s practical gift of military-style boots, which cuts through Shallan’s anxiety and reminds her that her identity can hold multiple selves at once.

When Shallan is taken aside to pray before the ceremony, Pattern appears with Testament, who had hidden on the original day to protect Shallan from truths she could not yet bear. Pattern tells Shallan that lies once kept her alive, but now she needs to reinforce what she has learned rather than flee it. Testament urges Shallan to “enjoy” life, and Shallan recognizes that happiness is not something she must refuse. That realization gives Shallan the resolve to relive the day fully instead of treating it as another ordeal.

Shallan reunites with her brothers and receives Mraize’s letter confirming that he has kept his promise to protect them, though the threat beneath his words remains clear. Shallan chooses not to dwell on that menace and steps into the wedding celebration determined to appreciate it. She notices the gathered friends and allies, including her squires, Sebarial and Palona, Navani, and a distant, guarded Kaladin, and she reflects that her bond with Kaladin is shared pain rather than romance.

At the ceremony, Shallan focuses on Adolin and lets herself savor what she had rushed through the first time. She admires the clothing, remembers that Kaladin gave Adolin the sword he chose to wear, and records the moment in memory for future art. Under Kadash’s guidance, Shallan and Adolin exchange vows about giving each other strength and never facing weakness alone. They kiss early, then again with open passion, and Shallan fully accepts the truth she had struggled to claim before: she deserves this love and this joy.

Afterward, Shallan notices that Testament seems to heal slightly simply by being present for the wedding at last, as if something long denied has been set more properly in place. Then Shallan follows the remembered thread she had once handed off to Veil and finally faces the most terrible part of the scene. In the back of the room, among the servants, she sees her mother. Shallan understands at last that her mother was the Herald she killed; that death sent the Herald to Braize, and the Herald’s eventual breaking and return initiated the Return, unleashing the Voidbringers and helping begin the current disaster.
