Chapter 137
Overview
This chapter delivers three major turning points at once: Shallan kills Mraize by outmaneuvering him with deception and anti-Stormlight, Venli secures a binding peace that gives the listeners the Shattered Plains, and Dalinar reaches a spiritual breakthrough while trapped in Taravangian’s impossible contest. Each victory comes from rejecting an abuser’s logic rather than winning by brute force.
Shallan finally ends Mraize’s hold over her, Venli proves diplomacy can succeed where war failed, and Dalinar realizes that suffering and moral burden are shared by all people, not just rulers. That insight lets him understand Honor’s pain and prepares a decisive new step in his confrontation with Odium.
Summary
Mraize approaches Shallan convinced that Iyatil’s death has freed him to rule and that Shallan must either submit or be eliminated. He tries to tempt her with knowledge and travel between worlds, then studies her warily as she uses an illusion of him and sends a Cryptic at him as distractions. Believing Shallan frightened and cornered, Mraize notices too late that she has mixed Lightweaving, misdirection, and sleight of hand to conceal her real attack.
When Shallan and Mraize finally clash, each tries to seize the weapon that matters: the anti-Stormlight knife. Shallan tells Mraize he still has a choice, but Mraize decides he must kill her first. Shallan’s deeper lie wins. Mraize thinks he has forced her to drop the deadly dagger, but he has actually dropped it himself, and both stab each other at nearly the same moment. Shallan drives the anti-Stormlight blade into him, tells him she is choosing not to remain abused, and Mraize dies as Stormlight and anti-Stormlight react inside him.
On the Shattered Plains, Venli realizes the deadline has come when El finally stops guarding the Oathgate, proving he never discovered her hidden plan. She joins the Five as El announces that the contest has begun and national borders are now fixed. Thude then formally demands that the Fused withdraw, and Venli produces a treaty signed by Jasnah that recognizes listener control of the Shattered Plains. The agreement gives the listeners the land, tariffs from the Oathgate, and rent from human operations, ending seven years of war through diplomacy instead of battle.
When one Fused reacts with violence, El kills him with a summoned Blade and insists that Odium’s terms must be honored. After reading the treaty, El accepts that the outcome is valid, notes that it creates different opportunities, and orders his forces to retreat. Venli’s long, secret effort therefore succeeds: the listeners gain their homeland and a real peace with the humans.
At Urithiru, Dalinar continues to face Taravangian’s trap: either kill Gavinor or forfeit and become Odium’s instrument. Dalinar tests each option in his mind and sees the corruption in both. Killing Gavinor would prove Taravangian’s ruthless philosophy, but surrendering would let Odium twist Dalinar into a weapon for wars across worlds. As the highstorm builds above the tower, Dalinar speaks with the Stormfather, feels the lives and burdens of ordinary people across the world, and recognizes Taravangian’s deepest lie: terrible moral choices are not unique to kings.
That realization leads Dalinar to a deeper understanding of mortality, failure, and the pain within Honor itself. Remembering what he has witnessed through time and the Spiritual Realm, he sees that no one can be wise enough, strong enough, or honorable enough to avoid every failure. He finally acknowledges the suffering of Honor, a power agonized by broken oaths, and at the meeting of two storms Dalinar reaches a breakthrough. He tells the Stormfather that he now knows the Words.
