Chapter 140
Overview
Kaladin’s Fifth Ideal is accepted, and the burst of power drives Ishar’s ancient corruption out of him and out toward the other Heralds, opening the possibility of their healing. As the corrupted Honorbearers rise, Kaladin passes Nightblood to Szeth, who regains his Lashings and prepares to confront the twisted remnants of his family. At the same time, Dalinar tries to reclaim Honor, but before that power can fully answer him, Renarin and Rlain shatter Ba-Ado-Mishram’s prison and release a dark storm that radically shifts the struggle.
Summary
Kaladin speaks the final Words, and the Wind itself accepts them. Power floods him so violently that it surges back through Ishar’s Bondsmith tether, hurling Ishar away and driving out the black corruption he had taken from Odium long ago. Kaladin senses that same darkness being pushed from the other Heralds as well; it does not heal their ancient damage, but it may finally make healing possible.
With Ishar collapsed, Kaladin draws Nightblood and cuts the remaining tethers, freeing Syl, Nale, and Szeth. But the crisis is not over, because Ishar’s six Honorbearers rise still wrapped in that same shadow. When Kaladin tries to set Nightblood down, the sword keeps feeding on his Stormlight through a dark line of Connection, claims it has learned from other swords and the Surges, and insists Szeth should wield it instead. Kaladin gives Nightblood to Szeth and lets his own Light sustain them both.
Szeth faces the six Honorbearers, who were made from his family and teachers. At first he sees only their fury, but then he recognizes pain and helplessness beneath it, because he has lived as a puppet himself. Neturo, his father, apologizes through tears. Nightblood confirms it can restore Szeth’s Lashings through its new bond to Kaladin, and with his powers returned, Szeth embraces the coming battle not as mindless slaughter but as an effort to set things right.
The scene shifts to Dalinar standing within the blazing perpendicularity above Urithiru while Taravangian questions him. Dalinar admits he cannot defeat Taravangian as a mere man and declares that Honor must return. He reaches for the power, and it answers but hesitates to fully enter him, voicing pain tied to humankind and hinting at his history as an oathbreaker.
Then a revelation gives Dalinar a crucial image: Renarin and Rlain holding Ba-Ado-Mishram’s gemstone prison at the edge of an unknowable future. Shallan shouts for them to stop, but they ignore her, confirm their resolve to each other, and smash the gemstone on the ground. The prison breaks, and a dark storm bursts free, changing the stakes of Dalinar’s attempt to restore Honor.
