Chapter 30

Overview

Renarin spends the chapter confronting two kinds of isolation: his private feelings for Rlain and the burden of visions no one else has been able to share. Drehy gives him compassionate, practical support, and then Rlain unexpectedly enters one of Renarin’s futuresight visions, creating a new bond between them and changing what Renarin’s power means.

The shared vision reveals possible futures, hints that the singers predate Roshar’s current gods, and ends with a terrifying singer figure linked to destruction. Shallan’s arrival connects that omen to the broader plot around Dalinar, the Spiritual Realm, and Ba-Ado-Mishram, pulling Renarin and Rlain directly into a central mystery of the book.

Summary

In the fields around Urithiru, Renarin reflects on how the tower’s restored systems have made farming easier and more productive, though the sudden abundance leaves him uneasy. He watches Rlain help human farmers despite their distrust, noting Rlain’s patience and competence. Drehy arrives from a meeting with a report for Renarin, partly because Dalinar and Navani still hope Renarin will accept a royal role if needed, but after delivering the message Drehy turns the conversation toward Renarin’s obvious feelings for Rlain.

Drehy speaks plainly and supportively, telling Renarin that there is no meaningful standard of “normal” and that Renarin should think about what he wants instead of only what his family wants. Renarin admits his fear that Rlain may not return his interest and that he cannot bring himself to ask. Drehy does not pressure him, but reminds Renarin of his past courage and offers himself as someone who can answer questions from experience. Encouraged, Renarin agrees to come to Bridge Four stew, but before he can approach Rlain, one of his visions suddenly overtakes him.

The point of view shifts to Rlain, who reflects on how becoming a Radiant has let him feel like himself regardless of form, especially through his bond with Tumi. Seeing Renarin trapped in a visible distortion, Rlain approaches and is pulled into the vision with him. Inside a dark space lined with stained-glass windows, Renarin is overwhelmed with relief because Rlain can finally share something that has long isolated him. As they move through the windows, Renarin warns that the images are possible futures or partial truths rather than certainties.

Together they study several scenes: Renarin seated on a throne in what appears to be Kholinar, wearing clothing Rlain thinks resembles singer dress; an image of the Everstorm; Dalinar standing before a glowing figure as a city collapses; and a peaceful green field holding distant human figures. When Rlain asks what guides these visions, Glys says they come with great swells in Roshar’s rhythms and the attention of ancient powers. Glys further reveals that the singers were already on Roshar before Honor, Cultivation, and Odium arrived, pushing Rlain to consider a far older history than he had understood.

At the end of the corridor they find a final, darkened window showing a singer woman’s face. The image comes alive in agony, the surrounding windows shatter into glimpses of burning cities and broken bodies, and the woman declares that she will break everything. Renarin drags Rlain back into the real world, leaving both shaken; Rlain notes that the rhythm he heard was Agony, one associated with Regals and Fused. Shallan then arrives and urgently asks for their help with Dalinar, the Spiritual Realm, and people seeking Ba-Ado-Mishram’s prison. Because Rlain knows Mishram’s role in singer history, he suspects the face from the vision may have been hers.
