Chapter 65

Overview

Shallan’s confrontation with Mraize turns into both a physical fight and a revelation: Odium has left Ba-Ado-Mishram imprisoned because he fears what she might become, and the Ghostbloods want her prison as leverage against him. Shallan resists Mraize’s manipulation, but Formless resurfaces strongly enough to help him escape, showing that her healing is real but incomplete.

Meanwhile, Dalinar witnesses Talenel’s original acceptance of the Oathpact and sees that Taln chose immortality only after understanding its cost. As the vision breaks down, Dalinar secures a crucial Connection from Honor’s forming blade, advancing the group’s effort to reach the key moment of Honor’s death.

Summary

Radiant realizes too late that the false Tanavast is Mraize in disguise. When Renarin warns her, Mraize drops the act and attacks with a knife, sending the guards fleeing in confusion. Radiant fights back with the anti-Stormlight knife while Rlain joins her with a spear, but Mraize proves faster and more prepared: he blinds Rlain with a dart, cuts his throat, and forces both Rlain and Renarin out of their borrowed Herald bodies.

Radiant wounds Mraize by taking a knife through her own forearm and stabbing him in the chest, but the anti-Stormlight does not kill him outright. As Shallan presses the advantage, Mraize distracts her with the real reason for the Ghostblood mission. Shallan works out that Odium could have freed Ba-Ado-Mishram already but has chosen not to, meaning he wants her imprisoned because he fears her. Mraize confirms that Thaidakar wants Mishram’s prison as leverage against Odium and urges Shallan to help him.

Shallan refuses and tries to finish Mraize, arguing that Odium fears Mishram for the same reason gods should fear their creations: even Adonalsium was killed by those beneath it. Mraize reveals he has not been as weak as he seemed, briefly recovers enough Stormlight to throw her aside, and is nearly overpowered when Radiant manifests physically to seize him. At that moment Formless appears as a shadowy version of Shallan and urges her to kill both Mraize and Dalinar, insisting that Shallan only destroys. The shock breaks Shallan’s focus, Radiant vanishes, and Shallan panics badly enough to call on Glys and Tumi to pull her out.

The chapter then follows Dalinar inside the vision of the Oathpact’s founding. He and the others find Talenel not as a mythic warrior but as an ordinary, somewhat shabby horse keeper. Nale argues that Taln should join the pact because he represents common people rather than kings. Taln confronts Honor over the destruction of his grandmother’s world, rejects the first offer of immortality, then listens as Honor explains the true cost: pain, isolation, and possible binding alongside the enemy. Only after making sure another person would otherwise be chosen does Taln deliberately accept, swearing to protect the people and hold back the darkness.

As the vision races toward collapse, Dalinar hurries back to the tent where Honor completes the pact by drawing splinters of Light from his chest for each Herald. When Honor reaches Dalinar, Dalinar takes the glowing piece of Connection and recognizes it as a stable anchor that may let them finally reach the era of Honor’s death. Back in the present Spiritual chaos, Shallan is comforted by Pattern and Testament and learns that Glys and Tumi have reset the damaged scene so Dalinar and Navani will notice nothing wrong.

Watching from outside the reset vision, Shallan forces herself to remain present instead of handing control to Radiant. Though she cries and hears the child-voice within, she endures the sight of Formless and recognizes that its hold on her is weaker than before. Veil reassures her that this is healing, but Shallan also sees that Mraize escaped with useful information and may only have been distracting her while Iyatil pursued another objective elsewhere. Concluding that the current strategy is failing, Shallan asks to be taken to Renarin and Rlain so they can devise a new plan.
