Chapter 142
Overview
Dalinar rises fully into Honor’s power and nearly attacks Taravangian directly, but he realizes that a divine clash would destroy Roshar and that Honor itself carries a dangerous, warlike obsession with righteous certainty. In a final vision with Nohadon, Dalinar reframes victory: not defeating Odium immediately, but preserving a future where Honor can grow and others can finish the struggle. Back on the rooftop, with the Stormfather’s consent, Dalinar chooses a radical sacrifice and renounces his oaths. At the same time, Kaladin faces being consumed by Nightblood as Ishar wakes powerless.
Summary
Dalinar expands into the full power of Honor and confronts Taravangian on equal terms. In that state, Dalinar immediately sees a third option beyond the champion’s bargain: he could try to destroy Odium outright. But as Honor’s power presses him toward conflict, Dalinar realizes the shard’s nature includes not only oaths but also a destructive need to be right, the same impulse that has fueled pride, vengeance, and war throughout history. When Dalinar and Taravangian agree to fight, the clash begins to shake the tower and surrounding land.
At the brink of disaster, the Stormfather pleads with Dalinar to stop. Dalinar remembers his old vision of cataclysm and understands that the destroyer in it is not some outside enemy but himself. He sees how often he has justified brutality in the name of honor, from the Rift to the war on the Shattered Plains, and he refuses to let that pattern define this final choice. Instead of attacking Odium, Dalinar pulls back and is drawn into one last vision.
In parallel, Kaladin kneels beside Ishar after the struggle in Shinovar. Nightblood is devouring Stormlight so quickly that Kaladin’s supply is nearly gone, and black veins begin spreading from the weapon’s tether on his hand. Syl and the Wind warn that something immense is happening with Dalinar, and Ishar wakes enough to recognize the horror of what he has done. Ishar no longer seems to have access to his powers, Nale arrives disoriented, and neither can provide enough Light to solve Kaladin’s crisis. Kaladin promises the Wind he will not curse life again, even as Nightblood threatens to consume him.
Dalinar’s vision places him with Nohadon in a warm, ordinary room where they bake and eat Shin bread. Nohadon refuses to give Dalinar a simple moral answer, instead forcing him to examine what victory truly means. Dalinar admits that fighting Odium directly would ruin Roshar, but surrendering and serving Odium would eventually help Taravangian conquer far more. Through their discussion, Dalinar realizes that the power of Honor has begun developing its own mind, still young and simplistic, and that it chose Dalinar because he understood suffering.
When Dalinar speaks directly to this childlike Honor, he pushes it toward empathy, asking it to try to understand Evi and the choices of others rather than judging only by broken oaths. From this, Dalinar concludes that the shard can grow and change, but only if given time and the right lessons. He decides he cannot defeat Taravangian himself; instead, he must deny Odium an easy triumph while preserving the possibility that others can eventually end the war. Returned to the rooftop, Dalinar tells Taravangian he has learned the true lesson, gains the Stormfather’s willing support for a Herald-like sacrifice, and makes his fateful choice: “I renounce my oaths.”
