Chapter 146

Overview

As Dalinar’s death reshapes the world, Wit entrusts Sigzil with a Dawnshard just before Taravangian kills him, creating a major new threat and responsibility that reaches beyond Roshar. In Urithiru, Navani and the Sibling fall inaccessible, Renarin refuses kingship and pushes the city toward representative rule, and Dalinar’s death is publicly reframed as both sacrifice and apparent failure.

Szeth survives Kaladin but must face his death and choose a better path in Shinovar, while Jasnah confronts the collapse of both her plans and her moral certainty. At Narak, Venli discovers a new black-blue source of power tied to Retribution, signaling that the listeners’ homeland will be central to whatever world comes next.

Summary

In Urithiru’s medical rooms, Sigzil reels from losing his spren and blames himself despite others praising his actions. Lirin tries to treat him, but Wit bursts in with urgent news: Dalinar is dead, the Sibling is shutting down, and Taravangian’s power will soon target Wit. Wit reveals that he is carrying a Dawnshard, an ancient power Odium must never obtain, and because Sigzil is no longer a Radiant, Wit asks him to hold it temporarily. Sigzil agrees, hoping to redeem himself, and the Dawnshard settles into him with a single overwhelming command: Exist.

As Taravangian arrives, Wit uses a device to send Sigzil away. Taravangian vaporizes Wit, but Sigzil survives and drops into Shadesmar, where terrified spren surround him. In Urithiru, Renarin surveys the aftermath: Navani and the Sibling are sealed inside crystal, alive but unreachable; the Oathgates no longer work; spanreeds are silent; and Urithiru is trapped beneath an impassable dome. Because Navani is incapacitated and Dalinar is dead, the highprinces look to Renarin, but he refuses the throne and instead pushes for a representative government under Jasnah’s guidance.

Renarin, Rlain, and Jasnah then go to Dalinar’s body on the roof, where Gavinor sits grieving beside Oathbringer. Renarin mourns his father, thanks him for accepting and valuing him, and reads a short tribute declaring that Dalinar’s sacrifice allowed others to live. When Aladar and Teshav speak of Dalinar as a hero who failed, Renarin recognizes that this judgment will shape the future, though Glys senses Dalinar found the only possible path forward. Renarin arranges for Jasnah to Soulcast Dalinar’s body to stone, and Jasnah tells Renarin that while Dalinar’s work is over, theirs is only beginning.

Elsewhere, Szeth wakes in a dark, transformed world under constant red lightning. He discovers that his right arm is gone and finds Kaladin’s corpse nearby, along with the vanished Heralds and Honorblades. Nightblood confirms that something unimaginably powerful destroyed the Heralds and that a new god now fills the sky. After finding the small sheep and wooden horse from Kaladin’s pack, Szeth finally breaks down, then resolves to honor Kaladin’s charge to live better: he will find help to bury Kaladin and then go aid the frightened people of Shinovar.

Jasnah, alone in her rooms, grieves Dalinar, the collapse of her political hopes, the loss of Alethkar, and her inability to save either Bondsmith or preserve what she built. She also reconsiders her moral philosophy, admitting that her pursuit of the greater good through authority and calculation was deeply flawed. In her room she finds Wit’s farewell note, which confirms he is gone, and she is left feeling more alone than ever. At Narak, Venli reflects on Retribution’s offer of nightly Light and on the uneasy freedom of the listeners’ restored homeland. When a hidden underground pool begins filling again with a new black-blue liquid and a new rhythm, Venli realizes their land has become crucial to the future, and she commits to building a nation for singers who seek a more peaceful path.
