Chapter 70
Overview
Szeth reaches the Lightweaver monastery and is forced into a final Honorbearer trial that tests moral judgment and perception instead of swordsmanship, sharpening the chapter’s focus on how hard it is to separate truth, law, and evil. In parallel, Venli leads listeners and chasmfiends through the chasms toward a mysterious rhythm near Narak, confronts her guilt over Eshonai, and learns that Eshonai died free of Odium’s control. Thude’s refusal to join the battle keeps Venli’s people out of open war, redirecting their path toward a deeper mystery instead.
Summary
As Szeth approaches the final monastery with Nale, Kaladin, and Syl, he reflects on truth, law, and the way people reshape reality to fit what they need. Feeling isolated from everyone around him, he speaks privately with Nightblood about pain, morality, and whether evil can truly be identified so simply. Szeth admits that obvious principles exist, but most real choices become tangled when people justify harm, follow laws, or pursue good ends that produce terrible results.
At the monastery, Szeth worries not only about the Honorbearers he must confront, but also about the mysterious Voice still gripping Shinovar. He concludes that, even without full answers, he must continue the cleansing mission he has chosen. When Kaladin tries one last time to stop him, Szeth rejects the appeal, hands over the pack of swords, and enters alone because he believes duty requires it.
Inside the dark monastery hall, Szeth finds thirty identical images of the Lightweaver Herald standing in rows beneath a skylight. Moss-son-Farrier, the Lightweaver Honorbearer, explains that he is hidden among them. The test is not a duel, but a puzzle: Szeth must identify the one perfect figure, strike through its eye with his Blade, then escape with Moss’s Honorblade. If Szeth touches the illusions or chooses wrong, he fails the pilgrimage. Realizing this challenge depends on judgment rather than combat, Szeth dismisses his Blade and prepares to solve it.
Elsewhere, Venli guides a group of listeners, several allies from Urithiru, Leshwi and her Heavenly Ones, and a following group of chasmfiends through the Shattered Plains’ chasms toward a strange rhythm only she is beginning to hear clearly. As she travels, she reflects on how resentment distorted her memories of childhood. She recognizes that she truly loved the songs and that her bitterness toward Eshonai hollowed out the truth, so she deliberately recalls happier memories instead.
When Thude questions their route because it leads toward the Everstorm and the battle at Narak, Venli explains that she is following the hidden tone and considers whether they should intervene in the fighting. Their conversation turns to Eshonai. Venli finally tells Thude that she saw Eshonai’s body, and through Timbre learns that Eshonai had cast off Odium’s control before she died. Even with that hopeful sign, Thude refuses to let their tiny, wounded people join the war. Venli accepts his authority, agrees they will not fight, and continues inward through the chasms toward the source of the rhythm.
