Chapter 126

Overview

Dalinar learns that the Stormfather has spent centuries seeking a worthy champion because taking up Honor’s power or relying on the contest alone cannot truly solve the Odium problem. Honor rejects Dalinar, but Dalinar still gains crucial clarity, forgives the Stormfather, and returns to act in the present with a sharper understanding of the stakes.

In fallen Azimir, Adolin confronts total military collapse and accepts that survival, not resistance, is all that remains while he waits for a Windrunner rescue. Meanwhile, Szeth and Kaladin carry a weakened Nale toward Ishar, and Nale’s doubts about Ishar and the Heralds signal that Roshar’s old systems of salvation are fundamentally broken.

Summary

As the visions end, Dalinar absorbs what the Stormfather has finally shown him about Tanavast, Mishram, and Honor’s long decline. The Stormfather explains that for centuries he sought a mortal champion who could force Odium into a contest, but he rejected each candidate for craving power, immortality, or glory; Gavilar, Dalinar realizes, helped cause his own death for the same reason. Dalinar also understands a more dangerous truth: if someone simply took up Honor’s power and attacked Odium, that act could break the contest and unleash destruction rather than save Roshar.

Dalinar presses the larger problem. Tanavast’s old solution, like Dalinar’s current contract, only delays Odium by trapping him on Roshar until he can provoke others into attacking first; because of that, Dalinar concludes that Odium cannot merely be contained forever. The Stormfather admits his own failures, says Dalinar changed him by forcing him to engage with mercy and pain again, and tells Dalinar that Honor’s power is present in the visions and in the world itself, growing more aware. When Dalinar tries to accept that power, it rejects him with the judgment that humans break oaths. Though angry that the Stormfather hid so much, Dalinar chooses to forgive him, learns Navani and Gav have already returned home, hears that Renarin and Shallan remain hidden from divine sight, and steps out of memory into the present.

In Azimir’s crowded saferoom, Adolin and the surviving officers receive more terrible news: the Shattered Plains have fallen, and Thaylenah has signed terms with Odium just as other nations did. Noura bitterly calls them traitors, but Yanagawn points out that Azir long dominated places like Emul and cannot be surprised that they seized a chance to escape imperial control, even by turning to another tyrant. Exhausted and in severe pain after another failed defense, Adolin feels the weight of watching a second city fall despite his efforts, yet he also clings to a new inner conviction that he still has a second chance, including a chance to reconcile with Dalinar.

May reports that Windrunners and squires have landed outside the city and will attempt a stealth rescue once conditions settle, with only three hours left before Dalinar’s deadline. Yanagawn asks if they should gather what remains and fight, but Adolin surveys the wounded and depleted survivors and tells the emperor there is nothing they can realistically do. Sarqqin reports that the saferoom has only a few days of food and water for so many people, and Noura accepts that most of them may need to surrender after Adolin and the emperor are flown out. Yanagawn insists that Noura leave with him because conquered leaders are in danger, and Adolin lies back down, trying to rest while the thought of what he will do with his second chance keeps returning.

Elsewhere in Shinovar, Szeth and Kaladin load the weakened Nale into an old wagon beside eight Honorblades and Nightblood, after a rural couple shelter them and lend horses. Rather than fly, Szeth and Kaladin choose to conserve Stormlight as they travel the last stretch toward Ishar’s monastery, and their conversation briefly turns light as they compare the humble beginnings of their journeys and endure Syl’s teasing. Nale then explains that Ishar’s final test is meant to humble Szeth and is likely designed for him to fail. More importantly, Nale admits that he now doubts Ishar’s recent plans, fears what Odium’s influence did to him, and wonders whether the Heralds’ true failure was abandoning Roshar instead of remaining to teach and lead. By the end of the ride, Nale concludes that the world may still need Heralds, just not the broken ones it currently has.
