In Azimir’s hidden saferoom, Adolin lies awake after the city’s fall, shaken less by nearly dying than by the fatalism he felt in that moment. Maya, speaking more strongly than before, argues that Adolin has always had purpose because he has helped others and brought her back, and she challenges his belief that his life means nothing. Her words do not solve his despair, but they steady him enough to keep going.

Notum then arrives with Skar, Drehy, and several Windrunners who were sent to evacuate Adolin and Emperor Yanagawn. They report that the wider war has gone badly: the Shattered Plains were devastated, many Radiants and soldiers died, Sigzil survived but lost his spren, and no front seems to have held. Hearing this, Adolin briefly turns his hope toward Dalinar, not as a flawless ideal, but as a father he can finally rely on despite his imperfections.

When Yanagawn refuses evacuation, Adolin connects Noura’s earlier legal argument about legitimacy with Yanagawn’s old skills as a thief. If the emperor physically holds the throne when the deadline arrives, Azir can still legally stand. That realization gives Adolin a new sense of meaning, and he proposes that he and Yanagawn sneak into the palace, seize the throne room, and save the city through law, timing, and nerve rather than open battle.

Elsewhere, Dalinar returns from the visions to his rooms in Urithiru and confirms that the real Wit is waiting for him. Dalinar reveals that the Stormfather holds Tanavast’s memories and that he has seen crucial truths about Roshar’s history, but he remains overwhelmed because none of that knowledge has shown him how to defeat Odium. Wit takes Dalinar walking through Urithiru, tells him a story about a failed lowborn boy raised for nobility, and quietly uses Lightweaving so Dalinar can move unnoticed and feel his Connection to the people who depend on him.

Back in Azimir, Noura resists the plan because she wants Yanagawn preserved, but Adolin, May, Kushkam, Colot, and others argue that the city is still chaotic enough for a small group to slip through. Yanagawn insists on leading personally, and Noura’s fear finally reveals itself as maternal love rather than mere political caution. Accepting that he cannot choose safety over duty, Yanagawn commits to the mission, and Adolin begins gathering every survivor able to walk, including soldiers, scribes, and Zabra.

Skar, Drehy, and Notum add the final piece by offering to lure away the Heavenly Ones and other Fused, creating an opening for the infiltration. With the plan set, Yanagawn strips off his imperial robes so he can move like an ordinary boy instead of a monarch. The chapter ends with his declaration that Azir does not need an emperor in ceremony now; it needs the thief he once was.
