On April 26, 1975, Vincent waits on a grassy slope at a Pink Floyd concert in Ventura, anxious for Lydia to return from the bathroom before the main act begins. The evening has already unsettled him due to their hitchhiked ride with Mr. Stewart and his girlfriend, Amelia, who boasted about being new neighbors. During the ride, Mr. Stewart praised Lydia’s running and college potential, stirring Vincent’s fear that Lydia could outgrow him and leave.

As the crowd chants for the band, Vincent decides to meet Lydia near the outhouses. He sees Lydia burst out of a toilet and run behind it, then moments later reemerge with Mr. Stewart, whose hand rests on her lower back. Vincent hides and watches, unable to hear their conversation, consumed by possessiveness and anger but worried that confronting them would ruin things.

He retreats to their original spot, recalling his anxiety during the recent bonfire that Lydia attended without him and reflecting on how Lydia’s opaque behavior fuels his insecurity. He contrasts Lydia’s guardedness with Poppy’s blunt honesty and wonders why Lydia chose him, mindful of the judgmental looks and whispers at school.
