Overview

On May 2, 1975, Vincent confronted Lydia after she arrived home late with Mr. Stewart. Jealousy and fear of losing Lydia fueled an argument in which Lydia defended Mr. Stewart's support for her ambitions and rejected the future Vincent imagined. Vincent left in anger and despair, fixating on Mr. Stewart as a rival and feeling relief that, at least, it was not Danny.

Summary

Late at night, Vincent watched from Lydia's porch as Mr. Stewart dropped her off. When Lydia searched for her keys, Vincent revealed himself and demanded to know where she had been, his tone edged with anger and hurt.

Inside the house, after Mr. Stewart drove away, Vincent pressed Lydia again. Lydia claimed she had been at training, saying her gear was in her duffel that she left in Mr. Stewart's car. Vincent did not believe her, pointing out that he had gone to the high school track looking for her and had not found her there.

Lydia said they had gone to the city college to use a proper track. Vincent noted Lydia looked pale and unwell, unlike after her usual workouts, and asked if Mr. Stewart had done something to her. Lydia vehemently denied this, insisting Mr. Stewart was the only adult who truly supported her and believed she could become more than her mother's reputation suggested.

Vincent said he believed in Lydia, but Lydia accused Vincent of wanting her to stay in town, marry him, and have children. She declared she wanted to leave and “be someone,” crediting Mr. Stewart with helping her pursue that goal. Vincent made a pointed remark about thanking Mr. Stewart, then walked out without closing the door.

Outside, Vincent struggled to contain tears and anger as he crossed the yard and headed home, acknowledging to himself that he was losing Lydia to Mr. Stewart. He consoled himself only with the thought that, at least, her attention was not on Danny.
