Chapter 15
Contains spoilersOverview
Olivia reviews newspaper clippings about the 1975 Ojai Carnival murders and later researches anniversary coverage at the library, uncovering intensified public suspicion of Vincent and a 1993 grand jury tied to a corrupt coroner. She secretly continues the email ruse with John Calder, who disparages her to Vincent, and seeks ethical counsel from Tom. Back at the house, Olivia confronts Vincent about the grand jury and his alibi; Vincent claims only his family knew Danny’s violent side and ends by admitting he could never find a way to say Danny might have been a killer.
Summary
In the morning courtyard, Olivia tells Vincent she plans to use archived news coverage since he forbids outside interviews. Vincent offers a folder of old materials and leaves her to review it. Upstairs, before opening the folder, Olivia sees an email to Vincent from John Calder criticizing Monarch’s choice of Olivia as ghostwriter and implying team dissent. Olivia, still posing as Vincent, replies to Calder asking what he thinks is needed and why Olivia can’t do the job, then forces herself to step away to avoid distraction.
After a walk, Olivia examines the folder’s aged clippings. A June 14, 1975 article reports the murders of two Taylor children—one found in a hallway, the other in a bedroom—names withheld due to age, with Vincent as the 16-year-old surviving sibling. A funeral piece shows the grieving family. A July 14, 1975 article provides estimated time of death between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., notes Danny was seen leaving the carnival earlier, and mentions police interest in identifying who drove Poppy after a hitchhiking trip; friends speculate Vincent knows more, despite all Taylors having verified alibis. A September note mentions a school vigil and that Vincent, though reportedly at school, did not attend the vigil.
Olivia goes to the library to find an article she remembers from 1985. A tenth-anniversary piece highlights community suspicion of Vincent, with Poppy’s friend Margot Gibson declaring she believed Vincent would harm Danny. Lydia, quoted, reiterates their alibi with teacher Mr. Stewart. The article also quotes Lydia asserting she would never allow her daughter to live with someone who had done something horrific. A 1995 retrospective rehashes suspicion and reveals that in 1993 Margot and Mark testified to a grand jury seemingly targeting Vincent due to the former county coroner’s misconduct, which could undermine the original time-of-death findings and thus Vincent’s alibi.
Olivia prints the article and calls Tom, asking when it is acceptable to break an agreement; Tom says never and advises honoring both agreements as best as possible. Returning to the house, Olivia finds Alma preparing to take Vincent to physical therapy. Olivia confronts Vincent about the 1993 grand jury and the coroner’s drug use. Vincent says his attorney heard rumors but authorities lacked evidence to proceed.
Olivia asks why Vincent did not push the investigation after his parents died. Vincent says he wanted to forget, that he and Lydia were traumatized, and that his parents believed the killer was the man who had given Poppy a ride the prior weekend and returned during the carnival, with Danny getting in the way. Olivia notes that no article mentioned Danny as unstable; Vincent insists only family saw that side and that Olivia is the first person he has told. He concludes by saying Danny was both hero and abuser to him, but Vincent could never figure out how to suggest that Danny might have been a killer.
