Poppy
Contains spoilersOverview
Poppy narrates a May 16, 1975 scene where she and Margot discuss new vandalism at the high school and probe Lydia about her connection to Mr. Stewart amid rumors of her recent abortion. Later that week, another targeted attack occurs at the school’s equipment shed, and Poppy privately links the timing to seeing Vincent sneak out the previous night, recalling his violent act against a neighbor’s cat.
Summary
At the Taylor house, Poppy and Margot discuss fresh graffiti found inside the school gym that morning. When Lydia arrives to wait for Vincent, Poppy and Margot test her reaction by bringing up the vandalism and Mr. Stewart. Lydia is guarded, drinks a Diet Rite, and avoids discussing Mr. Stewart, intensifying Poppy and Margot’s suspicions about Lydia’s relationship with the teacher.
Danny briefly appears, shirtless and confident, snatching chips and a beer before retreating to his room, largely ignoring Lydia. Poppy notes Lydia’s frail appearance—weight loss and dark circles—and thinks Lydia looks like someone who recently had an abortion. Margot suggests the graffiti, placed by the PE offices, feels personal and posits that Lydia’s baby could have been Mr. Stewart’s; Poppy resists but recalls seeing Lydia confidently accept a ride from Mr. Stewart on the night of the Pink Floyd concert while arguing with Vincent.
They remark that Frank, the custodian, will be the one to clean the graffiti, not Mr. Stewart, and Poppy privately reviews tensions: Vincent disapproves of Lydia’s training time with Mr. Stewart and her rides home with him. Watching Lydia stare blankly at the TV, Poppy and Margot conclude she “looks awful,” and Poppy jokes about never having sex.
A few days later, word spreads during second-period English that someone kicked in the equipment shed, slashed sports balls, and set a trash can on fire the night before around 11 p.m. A neighbor reportedly called the fire department. Students think a kid is targeting the PE staff, likely over a grievance with a teacher. Poppy freezes, having filmed Vincent sneaking out of the house around 10:30 p.m. the previous night.
Poppy internally connects the shed arson and slashing to Vincent’s escalating anger and remembers his killing of Mr. Stewart’s cat, Ricky Ricardo. She questions why Vincent would target the school rather than Mr. Stewart’s nearby house, noting there are many ways he could retaliate directly. Class begins with an Othello essay as Poppy tries to suppress her growing fear about Vincent’s behavior and the possibility that Margot is right about Mr. Stewart and Lydia.
