Chapter 8
Contains spoilersOverview
Olivia visits Jack and his husband Matt for dinner, reconnecting with Jack and sharing selective truths about her life. She discusses her sham marriage to Craig, her current partner Tom, and her return to Ojai to help Vincent, while continuing to hide key details. Later, she calls Tom, admits her subject is unreliable, and struggles with telling him the full truth, reaffirming her plan to keep her past and Vincent separate from her current life.
Summary
On Sunday evening, Olivia quietly leaves Vincent’s property to avoid questions and drives to the winery cottage where Jack lives with his husband, Matt. Jack warmly welcomes her, and Matt’s easy acceptance eases Olivia’s apprehension about resurfacing in Ojai after years away.
Over dinner, Jack and Matt draw out details of Olivia’s past. She describes her brief marriage to Craig, a French downhill skier, which she frames as a marriage of convenience that enabled her to gain French citizenship and shed her old identity. The conversation shifts to why she is in Ojai; Olivia tells them she is helping her father who has Lewy body dementia. Matt is sympathetic, while Jack’s reaction hints at his skepticism.
Olivia talks about her current partner, Tom, an architect who designed her writing studio, emphasizing their strong connection and mutual understanding. She notes the growing emotional distance caused by her secrecy about the project and her family. Matt invites Tom to visit, and outside by her car Jack discerns that Tom does not know about Vincent or the true nature of Olivia’s work; Olivia admits she does not want to involve Tom. Jack challenges her insistence on hiding, asking if it has really worked.
Later, alone in bed, Olivia scrolls through photos of Tom and relives the origins of their relationship and his attentive presence. She calls him and, without specifics, confides that her subject is unreliable and that she cannot write fabrications, especially with an upcoming publisher Zoom. Tom offers either solutions or distraction; Olivia chooses distraction, and he talks about a client until sensing her disconnect and ending the call.
Afterward, Olivia reflects that Tom would accept her truth, but she convinces herself that revealing it now would only hurt him. She resolves to keep her history and her father separate, finish the book to Vincent’s specifications with his name on the cover, and then return to her life allowing Tom and others to believe the family story she has constructed.
