Summary
On June 11, 1975, Poppy attends a party at Paul Stewart’s house after Margot convinces her to go. To cope, Poppy drinks multiple beers and becomes very drunk, reflecting on how the alcohol blurs her fears and the recent loss of her camera, which had been wrenched from her during an assault and was gone when she tried to retrieve it.
Poppy lingers in the backyard, missing the “safety” of filming. Inside, she moves through the kitchen and living room, grabbing another beer and looking at photo albums showing Danny in Stewart’s outdoor group. Girls at the party flirt openly about Paul Stewart, and Poppy, dizzy and upset, questions why everyone is there, signaling her growing distrust and anger.
Poppy scans framed photographs of Paul’s life on the wall and feels increasingly unsteady. Margot urges her to go home. Vincent arrives, and Poppy, disoriented, makes a cryptic remark to him about a “dark space” and a hidden clue, which he does not understand or appreciate.
Paul Stewart enters to announce burgers and, noticing Poppy’s condition, offers to speak privately. Girls make suggestive comments about him, but he ignores them and focuses on Poppy. She challenges him with his own maxim, “Information is power,” and pointedly asks whether knowing a secret is power too, implying she knows something compromising about him. Overwhelmed, she vomits into a plant.
Vincent volunteers to take Poppy home, and Paul agrees. Vincent and Margot quietly escort Poppy into the Taylor house past their inattentive, drinking parents. In Poppy’s room, Vincent brings water and aspirin and asks what is going on.
Poppy, unable to explain fully, gives a direct warning: Lydia should stay away from Paul Stewart. Vincent reacts with fear and worry, as if he understands the implication, and presses her to explain. Poppy, sick and exhausted, refuses to elaborate and closes her eyes.
