Chapter 35
Contains spoilersOverview
Olivia returns to Ojai with new evidence and shows Vincent the final Super 8 reel proving Paul Stewart sexually abused Danny and that Poppy filmed a confrontation days before the murders. Vincent reevaluates his long-held belief that Danny killed Poppy and agrees Olivia should expose Stewart in the memoir. Olivia reads Vincent a chapter that recounts Vincent arriving after the murders and removing the knife, and sends it to the publisher. Afterward, Vincent insists on telling Olivia what really happened.
Summary
Olivia spends four days drafting truthful chapters for Vincent Taylor’s memoir, then returns to Ojai determined to confront him with what she has learned. She finds Vincent recuperating, his hand bandaged, and tells him she visited her mother. Vincent admits he orchestrated a “hunt,” leaving clues for Olivia to find once his Lewy body dementia began, because he needed her to listen rather than be told.
Olivia reveals she recovered Poppy’s last Super 8 film from her mother and warns Vincent that this reel has sound. They watch footage of the oak grove showing Paul Stewart confronting Danny, referencing their “special connection,” grabbing Danny, and attempting to kiss him; Danny shoves him off and, when he notices Poppy filming, chases her as the camera captures her panicked flight before going black. The clip confirms Stewart abused Danny and that Poppy knew.
Olivia connects this to Poppy’s drunken outburst about secrets at Stewart’s party and proposes Stewart had motive to silence Poppy, and possibly killed both siblings, which could also explain why he lied to police about alibis. Vincent, shaken, admits he always believed Danny killed Poppy over a pregnancy and had nurtured hatred for Danny for decades, but now must reconsider Danny as a victim of abuse. He cries while Olivia consoles him.
Olivia urges putting all of this into the book to expose Stewart, and Vincent agrees. She reads him the chapter she has drafted: Vincent entered the silent house, smelled blood, saw Danny dead in the hallway reaching toward Poppy, who lay bleeding on her bed. Panicking, he fled out the back with the knife, later worrying it would implicate him; he and Olivia’s mother then pressed Paul Stewart for an alibi and were surprised how easily he agreed.
When Olivia asks whom Vincent believed killed Danny, Vincent deflects and orders her to send the chapter to their publisher, which she does. Only after the manuscript is sent does Vincent say he now needs to tell her what really happened, signaling a forthcoming revelation.
