Overview

Poppy narrated her final moments on June 13, 1975. She recalled Paul Stewart entering the house, disarming and stabbing her, then staging the scene before fleeing. As Poppy faded, Vincent attacked Danny in the hallway, Lydia arrived and cried out, and Poppy reconciled herself to death, lamenting the secrets that would remain untold without her film.

Summary

Poppy drifted in and out of consciousness, seeing Vincent jump Danny from behind and hearing them crash through the hallway while Vincent shouted, "What the fuck did you do to her?" Paralyzed and unable to speak, Poppy wished she could tell them the truth before they destroyed each other.

She flashed through childhood memories and regretted attending the party and drinking, which had amplified her anger—particularly toward Paul Stewart. Poppy had been waiting at the kitchen window for Vincent to arrive when Paul Stewart suddenly appeared, saying they needed to "clear the air."

When Poppy told Paul Stewart to leave, he revealed he had seen her parents depart for the movies and commented on how quiet the neighborhood was. As he spoke, Poppy gripped a kitchen knife and ran to her bedroom to hide.

Paul Stewart followed, overpowered her, twisted her wrist to redirect the blade, and drove the knife into her abdomen. He then wiped the handle with his shirt, dropped the knife to stage the scene, and backed away before leaving. When Poppy blinked again, Danny stood over her, crying and holding the discarded knife, understanding what had happened and what he had tried to prevent.

In the hallway, Vincent and Danny fought violently. Poppy mourned that her brothers would never truly see each other—Vincent would never understand Danny’s honor and sacrifices, and Danny would never see Vincent’s tenderness and wit. She recognized that without the last roll of film, no one would be able to explain Danny’s secret.

The fighting stopped. The back door opened, and Poppy panicked, fearing Paul Stewart’s return. Instead, Lydia entered, gasped, and shouted to Danny, "What did you do to him, Danny?" Poppy wished she could apologize to Lydia for focusing on blaming her rather than the men who put Lydia in that position.

Accepting that she was dying, Poppy tried to calm herself, ending with the thought, "It’s okay. I’m okay."
