Chapter 15: Paedyn
Overview
After exposing Paedyn’s silver hair, Kai uses the crowd’s fear of Ilya to claim her publicly and force a path out of the cellar. Their temporary alliance collapses in the street, where Paedyn turns on him and reveals that the deepest source of her hatred is personal: she witnessed Kai kill her father five years earlier. Imperials interrupt the confrontation, and Paedyn flees again, leaving Kai wounded and their already tangled bond reframed by old bloodshed.
Summary
Kai’s removal of Paedyn’s scarf exposes her silver hair to everyone in the cellar, instantly turning the crowd against her and destroying her ability to keep hiding as Shadow. Realizing she cannot fight her way through the room or keep earning money there, Paedyn bitterly accepts that Kai is her only immediate path out. Kai admits he exposed her because he needed her to depend on him, and Paedyn agrees to use him until she can escape him later.
Still holding her wrist, Kai faces the crowd and declares that Paedyn belongs to him as Ilya’s Enforcer and the king’s second. He threatens anyone who touches her, and the room falls silent because the people fear Elite power even without fully understanding it. Using that fear, Kai guides Paedyn out of the cage, up from the cellar, and into the night streets of Dor.
Once outside, Paedyn asks where he is taking her, but Kai refuses to explain his plan and says he is trying not to repeat past mistakes. The word wounds Paedyn because it reduces everything they shared to an error. Their argument sharpens as she resists his control, forces him to stop, and challenges his moral superiority by pointing out that both of them have killed fathers.
When Kai is distracted, Paedyn uses the combat training her father gave her to throw him over her shoulder and pin him with a hidden knife. Kai counters with a blade at her back, and the two hold each other at knifepoint. Paedyn insists that killing the king was justice against a tyrant, then pushes deeper, accusing Kai of also killing her father and saying that makes them alike.
Kai at first does not understand, but Paedyn reveals that five years earlier, in her house, she watched him kill her father. The revelation horrifies Kai and cracks his composure just as Imperials arrive, drawn by the commotion. Before Kai can answer, Paedyn slices his shoulder to buy time and runs, choosing flight over hearing whatever he was about to say.
