Chapter 25: Paedyn
Overview
Paedyn and Kai work together to escape Rafael’s cell, turning their shared captivity into a moment of trust and cooperation. Their flight through the sewers collapses into disaster when they reach a dead end and the tunnel floods, forcing both of them to confront the possibility of imminent death. Faced with that end, they finally confess what they feel and kiss, deepening the bond that makes their opposing loyalties even more dangerous.
Summary
Still bound together in Rafael’s prison, Paedyn and Kai try to free themselves by standing back-to-back and sawing their shared rope against a jagged stone in the wall. Kai distracts Paedyn with teasing banter and a guessing game while he does most of the work, and the rope gradually weakens. Exhausted, they rest and quietly admit that in moments like this they want to pretend they do not hate each other; when Paedyn asks whether Kai regrets what happened between them, he delays his answer and tells her to sleep.
When the guard returns with more bread, Kai puts their plan into motion. He kicks the metal tray into the guard’s face, breaking the man’s nose, and orders Paedyn to pull against him until the weakened rope snaps. Paedyn immediately knocks the guard unconscious, takes the key from his pocket, and unlocks the cell. Outside, she realizes the other prisoners are gone, then follows Kai toward a sewer grate at the end of the hall as guards begin closing in.
Together they force the heavy grate open and jump into the sewer below. Kai grabs Paedyn’s hand and leads her through the dark tunnel, but the water rises quickly from calf height to her waist and then higher, turning their escape into a fight against drowning. Because they had only planned as far as reaching the sewer, they have no idea where the tunnel leads. Their panic worsens when they slam into a dead end and hear guards approaching behind them.
Paedyn desperately pounds at the wall and searches for any opening, but Kai finally stops her when it becomes clear there is no visible way out. In the rising water, Kai answers her earlier question: he does not regret her, their past, or kissing her on the rooftop, though he says he will regret what duty will force him to do to her if he survives. Paedyn admits her own regret that she did not do things right and could not be what she was supposed to be. Believing they may be about to die, they abandon restraint, and after Paedyn whispers for them to pretend, they kiss in the darkness as the sewer continues to fill.
