Chapter 27: Paedyn
Overview
Paedyn gives up her clean chance at freedom and dives back into the sewer to save Kai, then revives him on the street. Their shared vulnerability deepens through honest talk about survival, death, and what they mean to each other, but the moment turns sharply when Kai reveals he planned ahead and shackles them together. The chapter transforms their bond from mutual rescue into a more painful entanglement, raising the stakes of both their attraction and captivity.
Summary
Paedyn drags herself out of the sewer and realizes she has survived, but her relief is shattered when she sees Kai sinking unconscious below the grate. Although saving him could ruin her chance to escape for good, Paedyn decides she cannot leave him to die after he saved her first. Unable to swim well, she dives back into the filthy water, reaches Kai, and struggles to haul both of them to the surface.
Once on the street, Paedyn notices a chain around Kai’s neck, removes it without thinking, and focuses on reviving him. When she realizes Kai is not breathing, she performs chest compressions and begs him to wake up. Kai finally coughs back to life, and Paedyn reacts with relieved laughter before covering that relief with sarcasm.
Lying together in the alley, Paedyn and Kai acknowledge that saving each other has changed something between them, even if they remain enemies. They thank one another and drift into a more vulnerable conversation about survival and death. Paedyn admits she has imagined her ideal death as being stabbed through the chest like the loved ones she lost, and Kai quietly apologizes for being the first to begin that pattern, a remark that deeply unsettles her because of what she knows about her father.
As evening falls, Paedyn warns that the alley is unsafe because guards will be searching for them. Kai brings up their kiss, and their argument quickly slides back into mutual attraction. Just as Paedyn is about to give in to another kiss, she feels metal snap around her ankle.
Kai reveals that the chain he carried from the prison was part of a plan to keep Paedyn from escaping. He fastens the other cuff to himself and states that he has secured his mission’s return to Ilya. Paedyn feels used, betrayed, and furious, realizing that her rescue and her feelings have only tightened her captivity, but she hides the hurt behind a cold mask and orders Kai to keep up as she starts walking with the chain between them.
