Chapter 17: Paedyn
Overview
Kai forces Paedyn to leave the inn before dawn, and their journey resumes under growing emotional strain. A bitter argument about home, grief, and King Kitt’s death exposes how differently they understand loss and justice. When Paedyn’s wound slows her down, Kai stops to rebandage her leg, deepening the tension between his role as captor and his increasingly careful treatment of her.
Summary
Kai wakes Paedyn before sunrise at the inn, insisting they leave quickly to avoid being recognized. Paedyn resists, exhausted and in pain, and mocks the idea that Kai cares about her well-being. Kai answers that he needs Paedyn healthy enough to survive the trip back, which prompts Paedyn to reject the idea of Ilya as home.
The conversation turns sharply personal. Paedyn says she has no home left because Kai and King Kitt destroyed her father, Adena, and her old life. Kai counters that Paedyn also took his father from him when she killed the king. Paedyn refuses the comparison, calling Kitt a monster rather than a father, and presses Kai to remember the king’s cruelty and the harm he caused. Unable or unwilling to continue the argument, Kai cuts her off and forces the discussion to end.
Kai then hurries Paedyn out of the inn, covering her face and hair with a scarf and paying the innkeeper as they leave. Outside, he guides her through crowded streets while keeping watch for danger. Paedyn tests his grip and considers escape, but Kai notices immediately and warns her not to try.
As they move through the city, Paedyn struggles to keep up because of the wound on her thigh. Kai notices her slowing and leads her into a side street. Even while teasing her, Kai checks the injury and sees that the bandage has failed.
Kai crouches and carefully cleans the blood from Paedyn’s leg before tearing a strip from his own shirt to make a new bandage. His gentle treatment contrasts with the violence that caused the injury, and the moment creates a brief, uneasy intimacy between them. After securing the wound, Kai asks if Paedyn can continue, and once she says she can, the two prepare to resume the journey.
