Kai and Paedyn keep kissing in the flooded sewer even as they believe they may die there. Paedyn repeats that she hates him, and Kai answers by telling her to prove it and use him, but when he starts to pull back, Paedyn turns his face toward hers and kisses him again. To Kai, the kiss feels final, as though he is trying to memorize her before the end.

When the water reaches Paedyn’s mouth, Kai shifts from kissing her to keeping her alive. Paedyn admits she never learned to swim, so Kai tells her to wrap her legs around his waist and holds both of them above the rising water. As the ceiling closes in, they quietly admit their fear while Kai struggles to stay afloat.

Then Paedyn notices air coming from above them and starts feeling along the crumbling stone ceiling. She breaks through enough stone to uncover a metal grate that has been covered over, and sunlight begins to stream in. While Kai keeps her supported in the water, Paedyn frantically claws at the ceiling and pushes at the grate, but the water rises high enough that both of them are forced underwater.

Under the surface, Kai keeps one arm around Paedyn and uses the rest of his strength to ram his shoulder into the grate until it finally gives way. When Paedyn begins sinking with her eyes closed and lips blue, Kai swims down, grabs her, and drives both of them upward. He gets Paedyn through the opening and hears her coughing as she reaches air, but after seeing that she is alive, Kai loses strength, stops fighting the water, and sinks into unconsciousness thinking of her.
