Chapter 46: Paedyn
Overview
Kai openly confesses that he loves Paedyn, and the two finally speak honestly about their fathers, their past betrayals, and the forgiveness growing between them. Paedyn cannot say the words aloud, but she clearly returns his feelings, and their bond becomes undeniable. Kai then chooses Paedyn over his mission and tries to free her, but Kitt’s approaching Flashes force them to hide the truth and resume their performance.
Summary
After their argument in the poppy field, Kai finally says the thing he has been trying to deny: he is in love with Paedyn. He strips away his titles and power, insisting that out in the wild he is only Kai, and admits that she has changed how he sees himself and the world. Paedyn tries to resist because their histories, their fathers, and the divide between Ordinary and Elite still stand between them, but Kai answers each objection by choosing her over old hatred.
Paedyn then forces their deepest wounds into the open. She asks whether any of what passed between them was false and whether what they did to each other through their fathers can ever be forgiven. Kai says he will not hate Paedyn for saving herself, and Paedyn admits that she forgave Kai because he never fully understood the system he served. She also confesses that even when she wanted to destroy him, she knew she could not live with killing him.
Once that truth is spoken, the tension between them breaks into open intimacy. Paedyn answers Kai indirectly, naming the small things she likes about him, and Kai kisses her. Their exchange turns playful and tender as Kai reveals he has counted Paedyn’s freckles, but beneath the joy Paedyn privately acknowledges that she loves him and refuses to say it aloud because she believes loving someone means eventually losing them.
The moment shifts when Kai decides action must follow confession. He takes Paedyn’s dagger from his boot and tries to pry open the chain on her ankle, intending to let her escape and face Kitt afterward. Kai admits that Kitt already suspected he might fail to bring Paedyn back, but Paedyn resists the idea of fleeing alone and refuses a future built only on running.
Before Kai can free her, he hears danger approaching: two Flashes sent by Kitt have found them near the city. Realizing they have no time, Kai shoulders his pack, tells Paedyn to play along, and promises he will fix this. As the searchers close in, he gives her one last intimate gesture and mouths a single command—pretend—forcing them back into the roles their feelings had just shattered.
