Kai leads Paedyn up to the palace throne room while wrestling with the knowledge that he is delivering the woman he loves to an uncertain fate. He tells himself this is duty, not choice, but his thoughts reveal how deeply he resents every hand laid on her and how afraid he is of what he will do if Kitt orders something worse. Because Imperials are watching, Kai forces himself into the cold role of Enforcer and hides everything real between him and Paedyn.

As they walk the hallway, Kai studies Paedyn’s anxiety and thinks about how different this performance is from their earlier false pretenses. Their dances, kisses, and closeness were never fake to him, and that makes bringing her here feel like betrayal. Knowing she may believe she is walking toward death, Kai secretly flicks the tip of her nose before opening the doors, using the familiar gesture to silently tell Paedyn that he loves her.

Inside, the throne room is full of nobles and advisers who stare at Kai and Paedyn’s battered condition. Kai notices his own bloodstained bandages and Paedyn’s injuries, including the blood running down her leg and the signs of rough treatment. The court looks at Paedyn with disgust, and Kai, needing to preserve appearances, yanks her forward and acts indifferent even though her fear only increases his anger.

When they reach the dais, Kai forces Paedyn to her knees before Kitt. He studies his brother on the throne and reflects that Kitt, made king too young and shaped by their father’s death, has lost the compassion that once defined him. Kitt formally welcomes Kai back, notes that he was several days late, asks what happened to his men, and receives only Kai’s repeated explanation of "unforeseen circumstances." Then Kitt turns the conversation toward Paedyn and, watching Kai closely, asks whether there are any other unforeseen circumstances he should know about, ending the chapter with suspicion and tension.
