Chapter 18: Kitt
Overview
Kitt's chapter reveals how badly he is unraveling after his father's murder and his own rise to the throne. Hiding in his study, secretly starving himself, and clinging to the role of "king," he pushes Andy away when she tries to help.
His confession that he does not know how to live without his father's commands exposes a dangerous dependence beneath his authority. The moment shows that the new king is emotionally broken, a condition that could shape both his rule and the wider conflict.
Summary
Kitt stands alone in his study, opening a cracked window to dump out another half-eaten meal. What began as a way to fool the servants, especially Gail, into thinking he was eating has become a dangerous routine, and he knows suspicion is growing as uneaten food piles below the window.
Andy arrives, pretending she has come to fix the window. Kitt immediately understands that the visit is really about him, and their exchange reveals how withdrawn he has become since taking the throne. Andy tries to lighten the moment by joking about her work as a Handy and about cleaning up after Kitt and Kai, but Kitt keeps his distance.
When Andy says that Jax misses Kitt and urges him to leave the study, Kitt insists that he is fine. The conversation turns more serious when Andy points out that food keeps "falling" from the window. Forced to face what he has been hiding, Kitt first deflects with sarcasm and then abruptly asserts the new distance between them by correcting Andy: he is "king" now, not just Kitt.
That correction breaks Kitt's composure. He admits that with his father gone, he no longer knows how to breathe, eat, or live without being commanded to do so. Andy responds with pity and offers to help him "fix the window," meaning the damage beneath his outward calm, but Kitt dismisses her and says the break is beyond repair. The chapter ends with Kitt still isolated, showing how grief and kingship are hollowing him out.
