Paedyn follows Lenny, Leena, Finn, and their bound prisoner Kai through Dor’s dark outskirts, exhausted from the day’s ride and frustrated that Lenny will not explain their destination. The group enters a ruined building, and Paedyn first mistakes the shadowy figures inside for a threat. Instead, they find dozens of sleeping people and meet the woman greeting Lenny with relief: his mother, Meredith.

Once everyone is introduced, Meredith immediately recognizes Paedyn as the Silver Savior and suggests a practical plan for survival. Because Kai is the king’s Enforcer and closest ally, Meredith argues that the group could use him to bargain for Paedyn’s freedom rather than keep running blindly. Finn and Leena then press for answers about the building and the strangers filling it.

Meredith reveals that the building is a refuge for people born from Elites and Ordinaries, whom she and Lenny call partials or “Mixes.” Kai senses their incomplete powers before Meredith explains their situation: they are too weak to pass as full Elites in Ilya and too feared to live openly elsewhere. Meredith introduces Luna, a little girl she rescued from Ilya’s slums, whose Blazer power appears only in her fingers and in a brief burst of fire-breathing. Meredith and several residents explain that Ilya kills people like Luna, so Meredith has hidden and relocated as many as she could to Dor, while Lenny secretly sent others to her from the slums.

The residents demonstrate their limited abilities, including a man who can create only a small flame in cupped hands and a woman whose Veil ability affects only her arms. Leena is deeply moved by Meredith’s work, while Paedyn focuses on Kai, who studies the partials in stunned silence as the reality of their existence unsettles him. Meredith offers the group shelter, and Paedyn settles in with the others, ordering Kai placed beside her so they can guard him in shifts. Ending the night with a taunting whisper about her cold feet, Paedyn keeps Kai close, signaling that their uneasy power struggle will continue inside this new sanctuary.
