Chapter 47
Contains spoilersOverview
Genevieve, home and memoryless, awaited the final letter from her husband, Rowin, whose correspondence had been recounting their time in Enchantra. She received a thick parcel containing a golden cuff and his last letter, which revealed the full plan that saved them and the devastating cost to her memory. Rowin affirmed his enduring love, his guilt over her not recognizing him, and his vow to search endlessly for a way to restore her memories, even if she must move on.
Summary
In the weeks after returning home, Genevieve obsessively awaited Rowin’s letters detailing their history, clinging to a hope they would restore her memories. By late June, after learning from the letters that they had been forced into marriage, her anticipation turned to dread; each new letter intensified her hollow longing without bringing back any recollection. She wished she could feel for Rowin what the letters implied she once had, both for his sake and to alleviate her own nightmares of Farrow.
One afternoon, Ophelia called Genevieve downstairs as Salem and the ghost cat Poe lingered nearby. Ophelia handed Genevieve a parcel in Rowin’s handwriting. Inside, Genevieve found a small black box containing a golden cuff engraved with “the light is wherever you are,” along with his final letter.
Rowin’s letter recounted the final stage of their plot against Knox. After Knox learned the Prince of the Devils was tied to Ophelia, he sought to control Genevieve, creating an opening. Inspired by a visit to Knox’s trove, Genevieve devised a plan to exploit Knox’s greed by enticing him to bargain for her soul rather than her death, so that her soul could be extracted, sealed in a Soul Lock, and later restored by Salem, satisfying the bargain’s technicality and freeing Rowin and his siblings from the Hunt.
To enact this, they approached Grave despite the risk. Genevieve persuaded Grave to help plant the idea in Knox’s mind and to push Knox to free them if they extracted her soul. Rowin told Ellin, who agreed to forfeit so she could return to Hell and enlist Wells and Sevin to remove their mother from Knoxium; Knox would still owe their mother the Fix after the Hunt. They then convinced Knox of Rowin’s apparent betrayal long enough for Knox to restore Rowin’s and Grave’s magic.
Rowin confirmed that extracting Genevieve’s soul and delivering her home nearly got him and Grave killed by Salemaestrus, and that Ophelia’s intervention likely spared them. The plan’s flaw was revealed: Salem succeeded in reuniting Genevieve’s soul with her body, but when she revived, she did not remember Rowin, causing him profound pain.
Rowin closed by calling it cruel to be a stranger to the one who knows him best and acknowledging that if her memories never return, it would be fair for her to move on. He admitted he cannot let go and vowed to spend his eternity seeking a way to restore her memories, pledging his enduring longing even if nothing else is truly eternal.
