Chapter 36
Contains spoilersOverview
Rowin uses their immunity token to take Genevieve to Hell via a Hellmouth, with Knox setting a noon deadline enforced by magical cuffs. In the Third Circle, they navigate a dangerous market, where Rowin kills a Demon who tries to take Genevieve’s eyes, encounter avid fans discussing the Hunt, and make a stop at a glittering shop where Rowin acquires a boxed item. They then head to Knox’s estate to see Rowin’s family, specifically his mother.
Summary
The chapter opens with Genevieve’s diary-style admission that she no longer hates Rowin and is oddly excited about going to Hell with him. She dresses in a mauve gown despite her new facial scar and meets Rowin at midnight for the choosing ceremony. Knox appears, and Rowin immediately redeems their token for access to the Hellmouth; Knox agrees to meet them in the study.
En route, Rowin warns Genevieve not to make eye contact with beings near the Hellmouth. In the study, Knox teases Rowin about reuniting with his mother and brothers, confirms that Wellington and Remi are at his estate in the Third Circle (Greed), and transforms the portal. He binds Genevieve and Rowin with violet cuffs that will forcibly return them at noon if they overstay. Knox notes Genevieve is leading the Favored vote, hints he has something to show her later, and vanishes.
They pass through the portal; Rowin’s Infernal Ink tattoos animate in Hell. The pair arrive in a gray, bustling market under a starless sky, crowded with colorful, gem-adorned beings. In an alley, a small chameleon-like Demon covets Genevieve’s eyes and lunges for her hair. Rowin reacts with preternatural speed, his arms shadow-formed, and rips the Demon’s head off, explaining that failing to follow through on threats emboldens predators here.
They move through the market, passing macabre shops and bizarre scenes, and Rowin washes the Demon’s black blood off using a hose from a Demon bathing an ostrich named Mouse. Genevieve wanders into a nearby potion shop and is recognized by three women—Gladys, Mathilde, and Astoria—who gush as fans of the Hunt. They praise Umbra and Sapphire, gossip about contestants (including Grave), and pry into Genevieve and Rowin’s sex life. Overwhelmed, Genevieve slips back out.
Outside, Rowin acknowledges the downside of being entertainment in Hell. Genevieve comforts him, and they proceed to a glittering trinket and gemstone shop where Rowin quietly completes a purchase, exchanging coin for a boxed item he does not reveal. With time ticking toward noon, Rowin says it is time to visit his mother at Knox’s estate, and they set off.
