Chapter 7
Contains spoilersOverview
Barrington Silver and Rowin confront Genevieve Grimm with a drastic plan to keep her alive during the Hunt: she must marry Rowin to exploit a loophole that allows two winners and potential freedom. Genevieve learns the Hunt kills non-winners by burning souls and returning bodies to Hell, which would be fatal to a mortal like her. Pressured by time before Knox arrives and watched by Hell’s spectators through enchanted mirrors, Genevieve rejects the proposal and flees.
Summary
After Barrington’s revelation about the Hunt, Rowin arrives and confirms he has informed the others. When Genevieve demands clarity on “win or be killed,” Rowin and Barrington explain that losing contestants have their souls burned from their bodies by Knox’s magic and are transported to Hell to serve Knox for the year; the winner remains at Enchantra. Barrington stresses that a mortal cannot survive that separation, and Genevieve acknowledges her mortal status.
A crash elsewhere draws Barrington away, and Genevieve waits in a warm drawing room stocked with liquor and antique furnishings. Sevin and Ellin enter, taunting her about bleeding, stabbing, and the Hunt; Ellin mentions Rowin’s “plan” and the voting for “Favored,” hinting at social dynamics in the game. Rowin and Barrington reappear and dismiss the siblings to speak privately with Genevieve.
Barrington explains that the Hunt has only ever included Silver family contestants and was designed for them. With Knox’s arrival imminent, he announces the proposed solution: Genevieve will enter the Hunt as Rowin’s wife to use a loophole allowing two winners. Genevieve is stunned and incredulous.
Barrington details that Knox once offered this loophole to spice up the spectacle; any Silver can invoke it. Rowin reveals the marriage plan was his idea, not merely Barrington’s. Genevieve bristles, insisting she would rather face the Hunt alone and citing her survival of Phantasma, but Barrington says playing alone is not an option for a mortal—Knox would kill her.
Rowin outlines the stakes of the loophole: if the married couple wins their first joint Hunt, they are permanently released from the game; if they lose, the newcomer becomes locked into the Hunt forever—though mortality makes that distinction fatal for Genevieve. Barrington presses that they must quickly learn to act as partners—no public fighting, plentiful affection—to convince Knox and Hell’s spectators watching through enchanted mirrors.
Genevieve pushes back, asking if she can marry another Silver instead, but Rowin refuses, asserting the plan was his and the victory would be his. The possessive phrasing riles her, and she declares she will never be his. Rowin produces a silver ring to formalize the ruse, and Genevieve, overwhelmed and refusing the scheme, bolts from the room.
