Chapter 2
Contains spoilersOverview
Genevieve Grimm travels by train through Italy toward Enchantra Estate, reflecting on her past, her secret magic, and her late mother Tessie’s hidden life. After arriving near Florence, she hires a driver to take her to Barrington Silver’s vineyard, only to find an ornate gate marked Enchantra—but beyond it lies only an empty field.
Summary
As the train speeds through Tuscany, Genevieve Grimm endures a tedious journey, her nerves taut as she approaches Florence, the closest city to Enchantra. She distracts herself by confirming via her books that the crows tailing her are likely a hex and by ruminating on her childhood: Tessie Grimm trained Ophelia in Necromancy while Genevieve hid her own magic and sought connection elsewhere. She recalls the recent Hellish competition, Phantasma, which revealed the breadth of the paranormal world and sharpened her desire to learn.
Genevieve’s thoughts turn to her mother’s past and a sepia photograph she stole from Tessie’s keepsakes, showing Tessie with Barrington Silver, both wearing matching heart-shaped lockets. She wonders if Barrington was a Necromancer and if his family might be like hers. She reviews the urgent, deeply imprinted invitation to Enchantra addressed to Tessie and admits her guilt: months before Tessie’s death, she had written to Barrington while pretending to be Tessie, hoping to prompt an invitation.
As the train nears Florence, Genevieve tips the attendant Luca and discreetly uses her magic to momentarily vanish her hand and a trunk to navigate the cramped corridor. At the bustling station, under a suddenly cloudy sky, she negotiates with a driver named Morello to take her beyond the city, sweetening the request with charm and the promise of a generous tip. A trio of crows circles above, a quiet reminder of the pressure driving her onward.
After a long carriage ride, the sky clears and the birds continue ahead as if guiding her. The landscape opens into a picturesque vineyard with flowering trees and a grand, intricately worked silver gate spelling Enchantra, its metal entwined with thorned vines heavy with distinctive purple berries that match the seal on the invitation. Sensing they have arrived, Genevieve and Morello approach the gate.
Morello hesitates, concerned that the directions might be wrong. Genevieve compares the gate’s vine-and-berry motif to the invitation and confirms the match. However, when they look past the gate, they see only a vast, empty field where the estate should be, leaving Genevieve at the threshold of Enchantra with no visible house in sight.
