Overview

Panicking after rejecting the forced marriage plan, Genevieve Grimm flees into a powder room and is ensnared by Knox through a mirror. Dragged into a bright, mirrored version of Enchantra and its rose-filled maze, she confronts Knox wearing her face and is forced into a deadly test. Chased by illusions of Rowin and Sevin and attacked by a stranger, Genevieve survives through brutal self-defense and escapes back through the mirror, then tries to flee the estate altogether.

Summary

Reeling from Barrington and Rowin’s proposal, Genevieve hurried down the corridor and locked herself in a powder room to regroup. As she steadied herself at the vanity, the mirror reflected her face with violet eyes and a ghastly smile, and Knox spoke inside her mind, calling himself the master of the house. When Rowin knocked, Knox magically relocked the door, silenced Genevieve, and snared her wrists with purple strings pulling her into the mirror.

Genevieve slipped into a mirrored version of the house where the halls were brighter and quiet. Following the strings, she reached the maze, now blooming with warm sunlight and roses. At the fountain, Knox materialized in her likeness, circling her and probing her motives. To protect herself, Genevieve lied that she was Rowin’s fiancée and that the wedding would be that night. Knox warned that his spectators would expect the couple to play, and that there would be consequences if wagers were disrupted, then declared he would run a preliminary test.

When Knox vanished, the maze exits shifted to block her. An illusion of Sevin appeared, taunting her, followed by an illusion of Rowin who attacked with a dagger. Genevieve jammed foliage into Rowin’s mouth and took a stab through her left palm without crying out, then noticed the illusion lacked his lip ring. Urged to run, she sprinted into the labyrinth as knives flew, cutting her cheek.

A hulking stranger ambushed her and drove a blade through her right shoulder. Cut off from her magic, Genevieve snapped; she seized the blade mid-swing despite slicing her injured palm, ripped it away, and killed the attacker by stabbing his eye and neck repeatedly in a rage. Another dagger narrowly missed her abdomen as the walls shifted again, slamming her to the ground, but she forced herself up and navigated the moving passages.

Whether by Knox’s leave or luck, Genevieve found a path out. She raced back to the powder room and climbed onto the vanity to plunge through the mirror. As she crossed back, Knox’s parting thought echoed: “This is going to be fun.”

Genevieve fell into the real powder room as Rowin smashed the door open. He demanded to know what Knox had said, but Genevieve, bleeding and shaken, crawled past him and bolted toward the front door, intent on escaping Enchantra even if it killed her.
