Chapter 12
Contains spoilersOverview
Genevieve Grimm is escorted to a hastily conjured winter garden where Barrington Silver officiates her Aeternitas marriage to Rowington Silver under Knox’s watchful, unseen gaze. Despite her fear of the word “eternally,” Genevieve completes the vows, shares an intense kiss with Rowin, and signs the certificate with Ellin and Sevin as witnesses. After Knox’s presence recedes and midnight tolls, Genevieve is suddenly overwhelmed by exhaustion and a draining of her magic, collapsing into Rowin’s arms. The chapter ends with a vivid, threatening memory or vision of being called a Demon and set on fire.
Summary
Sevin escorts Genevieve from her preparation room to the ceremony, removing his candy at her insistence and warning that during the Hunt the family must perform ruthlessly to satisfy Knox and avoid punishment. The corridors are lined with newly appeared mirrors, and Ellin leads them through an arched gate opened by Wells into an opulent, conjured garden aisle of roses, candelabras, and snow-dusted hedges. Sevin attributes the spectacle to Devil’s Familiar abilities and Rowin’s taste.
In the garden square, Ellin and Wells sit behind Remi, who appears unwilling, while Barrington stands to officiate. Rowin, immaculately dressed in black with gold accents, takes Genevieve’s hand. Barrington begins the Aeternitas ceremony. Rowin clearly repeats the binding vows. Genevieve hesitates at “eternally,” fearing binding herself to a worse fate, until Rowin quietly reassures her that nothing is truly eternal. She then recites the vows.
Barrington asks them to promise mutual protection; both say “I do.” He pronounces them husband and wife and directs Rowin to kiss the bride. Genevieve senses Knox’s oppressive attention, but Rowin steadies her and begins a deep, controlled kiss that overwhelms her. A distant whistle interrupts, and Rowin breaks away, returning to composed detachment while Genevieve reels.
Barrington presents a marriage certificate already witnessed by Sevin and Ellin. Rowin signs, then Genevieve signs. Barrington introduces them as Mr. and Mrs. Rowington Silver. The siblings disperse toward the house, and the feeling of Knox’s gaze lifts. Rowin cautions Genevieve to mask her true feelings better, noting Knox will promote their union in Hell for his patrons.
As midnight tolls, Genevieve tries to steady herself but is abruptly hit by intense exhaustion and a sharp pain as her vision blurs and the magic in her core drains away. She calls to Rowin before collapsing; he catches her, saying, “I’ve got you.”
The chapter closes on a searing memory or vision: someone accuses Genevieve of being a Demon, promises she will burn, drops a lit match, and her screams are swallowed by roaring flames.
