Overview

As midnight approaches, Rowin becomes Hunter and immediately eliminates Ellin by prior agreement, forcing a truce with Grave until the final showdown. Knox protests but accepts the setup for an "extra-explosive" finale. Rowin and Genevieve then spend the night in quiet companionship, confronting fear about the end and reaffirming their bond and honesty, culminating in an intimate exchange that feels like it could be their last.

Summary

Unable to sleep after Grave’s attack, Genevieve and Rowin pass the time in the library, avoiding talk of the Hunt while Rowin reads The Devil’s Darkest Desires and Genevieve dozes in his lap. Near midnight they head to the ballroom and encounter Ellin, Grave, and Knox. The Hunting Blade flies toward Rowin and Genevieve; Rowin catches it and selects a game designed to prevent head starts.

At the start, Ellin steps forward and tells the others this is between the rest of them, reminding Rowin of their agreement. Without hesitation, Rowin stabs Ellin in the heart with the blade, instantly removing her from the round. Knox snarls in frustration, but Rowin immediately addresses Grave, offering either a house-wide chase or a truce until the final showdown the next day.

After a tense pause, Grave accepts the truce, promising a more spectacular finale. Knox questions their commitment to the game, but Grave reassures him that saving their energy will heighten the conclusion. With Knox and Grave gone, Rowin tells Genevieve they must now wait for the end, leaving ambiguous whether he means their end or the game’s.

During the witching hours, Genevieve and Rowin return to the library. Genevieve reflects on her newfound interest in reading and the comfort of their shared silence. She quietly asks Rowin if he is afraid of how tomorrow will end. Rowin admits he is, and when she asks if everything will be okay because there are no more secrets between them, he eventually agrees.

Later, Genevieve wakes in bed on Rowin’s chest; he reveals he carried her from the library after she fell asleep. Rowin confesses he is glad she ignored his original warning to leave and tells her she has saved him. Genevieve reciprocates the sentiment, touching her ring and bracelet, and they share a deep, possibly final kiss.
