Chapter 40: Paedyn
Contains spoilersOverview
Paedyn confronts Blair in the palace corridors at night, intent on vengeance for Adena's death. Their confrontation escalates into a brutal fight that triggers a sudden inferno, trapping them and an intervening Imperial, Lenny, in Blair's room. Paedyn overpowers Blair despite Blair's telekinesis and deliberately burns Blair's face before succumbing to smoke and pain, losing consciousness as the room burns.
Summary
Restless after a day of isolation and exchanging notes with Kai, Paedyn leaves her room at night, driven by a desire to avenge Adena after her recent visit to the Fort. She encounters Blair Archer in the hallway, who taunts Paedyn for planning to kill her. Fueled by grief and rage, Paedyn throws a dagger, which Blair stops with her mind, and follows Blair into Blair's room to continue the confrontation.
Inside, Blair minimizes Paedyn's suffering and admits she killed Adena during the Trial, claiming it haunts her but asserting she "won." Imperial guard Lenny bursts in to intervene, but Blair pins him to the wall with her telekinesis while keeping her attention on Paedyn. When Paedyn charges, Blair freezes her in place, mocking Paedyn's Ordinariness.
Paedyn reframes Blair's insult, asserting that her Ordinary status is a source of true power that she found rather than was given. Blair expresses a brief, unexpected apology for Adena's death, then glances toward Lenny—and the room suddenly erupts in flames, breaking Blair's hold on Paedyn. Fire spreads rapidly, filling the room with heat and smoke.
Rather than flee, Paedyn attacks. She tackles Blair to the floor amid the flames, both suffering burns. In a detached, vengeful state, Paedyn pins Blair and forces Blair's face toward a wall of fire while Blair struggles, too weakened to use her Ability effectively. Lenny shouts from beyond the flames but cannot reach them.
Ignoring Blair's pleas, Paedyn deliberately presses Blair's face into the flames, burning the side of Blair's face while also scorching her own hand. As the stench of burning flesh fills the air and the fire intensifies, Paedyn's numbness fades into overwhelming pain and smoke inhalation, and she loses consciousness as everything goes dark.
