Chapter 41: Kai
Contains spoilersOverview
Kai rushes to find Paedyn after a fire in Blair's room and discovers Paedyn badly burned but alive. Lenny explains the blaze and Blair's death, which Kitt decides to cover up as an accident. Later, Paedyn seeks Kai for solace, confesses she deliberately killed Blair and that it did not ease her grief for Adena, and they narrowly avoid being discovered together when Kitt arrives. Kitt, distracted and oddly unfocused, privately informs Kai that the third Trial will occur tomorrow in the Bowl and departs after a strained exchange.
Summary
Kai storms through smoke-filled corridors to find Paedyn after waking to alarms and an Imperial at his bedside. Hydros work to extinguish the remnants of a fire in Blair's charred room. Lenny leads Kai to a quiet chamber where a Healer treats Paedyn, who is covered in burns and has a gash above her eyebrow. Kai demands answers, and Paedyn explains she went to Blair's room in anger.
Lenny fills in the scene: Blair had pinned Lenny, candles were lit, and a fire suddenly engulfed the room, separating Lenny from Paedyn. By the time Lenny reached them, Blair was dead; Lenny says he "took care of the body." When Kai blames Lenny, Paedyn intervenes, admitting she would not let Lenny stop her and implying she chose to attack. Kai recognizes the rage and guilt in Paedyn, while a Healer warns how close she came to death. Calum insists Paedyn must rest.
Kitt enters and declares publicly it will be treated as a terrible accident, promising to cover it up with the court and their father. Kai outwardly agrees and leaves, understanding Paedyn will seek him later, despite acknowledging she is not his to worry about.
Paedyn later bursts into Kai's room, healed but raw, asking for a sword to blow off steam. They trade barbs, and Paedyn hacks at a bedpost until Kai stops her and presses her to talk. Paedyn breaks down, confessing she killed Blair, felt monstrous watching Blair's skin melt, and that the act did nothing to ease the hole left by Adena's death. Kai comforts her as she cries, holding her and murmuring reassurances.
Kai suddenly senses Kitt approaching via familiarity with Kitt's Dual ability. To avoid being discovered together, Kai hustles Paedyn into his wardrobe. Kitt enters and, distracted, informs Kai that the third Trial will occur tomorrow in the Bowl and is meant to be unexpected for Paedyn, with no court announcement.
Kai, unsettled by the feel of Kitt's power, notices Kitt's distant, muttering state—Kitt speaks to empty air about timing and control. When confronted, Kitt snaps back to a smile, claims he just needs sleep, and tells Kai to trust him, saying he has everything under control. The brothers reaffirm their bond—"You and me"—and Kitt leaves, while Paedyn remains hidden.
