Epilogue: Kitt

Contains spoilers

Overview

Kitt awakens after death into a void of nothingness, frustrated by the lack of spectacle or peace. Death, revealed as Mara, briefly visits to tell Kitt this emptiness is his chosen peace and rebukes him for causing his own loneliness. After she leaves, Kitt reflects on his life, releases resentment, and longs for company. Two star-like lights appear, speak gently with him, and offer to stay with him until he sees Kai again.

Summary

Kitt experiences the afterlife as a complete void with no light, sound, or ground. Disappointed by the absence of the dramatic passage he had imagined, he wanders, half-aware, wondering if he is meant to wait for someone such as his brother, Kai, or Paedyn.

Death arrives, and Kitt recognizes her as Mara. Contrary to myth, Mara appears as a woman with chestnut hair and dark eyes. Kitt asks where he is, and Mara tells him this nothingness is his peace, implying he accepted his fate before dying. When Kitt admits he is lonely, Mara retorts that he did not have to be, calling his isolation his own doing, and promises only, “I’ll let you go gently,” before departing.

Alone again, Kitt reflects without anger. He does not blame Kai, Mara, or Paedyn for his death, and he acknowledges how the Plague clouded his final weeks. He wishes he could live again without letting power consume him, recognizing that regret keeps the dead restless. He questions whether he deserves such loneliness and calls into the void, but no answer comes and Mara does not return.

Time without measure passes as Kitt continues to drift. At last, two soft lights appear above him like stars. A warm female voice greets him by name, and when Kitt asks who they are, the lights say only that they thought he might like company. Kitt gratefully accepts.

Seeking absolution, Kitt asks if he is a monster. The female voice answers no, calling him the product of his father’s sins, and the second, deeper voice adds that he is not alone in that burden. Kitt observes their companionship, and they reveal that life separated them but death reunited them.

Comforted by their presence, Kitt shyly asks the stars to stay. They agree to remain with him “until you see your brother again,” noting that all of them are waiting for someone. The encounter leaves Kitt no longer completely alone in the void.
