Chapter 38: Kai
Contains spoilersOverview
Kai spends a sleepless night training in the ring until Kitt arrives to spar. Their bout blends nostalgia with tension as Kai notices Kitt’s fatigue and illness-like signs, and Kitt presses Kai about Paedyn. Kitt blurts that Kai loves Paedyn, then reaffirms their brotherhood, and they return to their practiced dance despite Kitt’s diminished strength.
Summary
At dawn, Kai realizes he has trained through the night, practicing strikes on a wooden dummy in the palace training ring. Kitt arrives, joking that Kai needs a tougher opponent, and steps in to spar after noting they have not trained together in weeks.
The brothers circle and trade blows, bantering as Kai lands early hits. Kai studies Kitt and notices dark circles, weight loss, weaker force behind his blade, and an off sensation in Kitt’s power, prompting Kai to ask if Kitt is all right. Kitt deflects with a cough and claims he has been under the weather, then asks if Kai has been with Paedyn.
Kai admits he has not seen Paedyn since the wine cellar. Pressing, Kitt says he is surprised and, after Kai challenges him, bursts out that Kai loves Paedyn—perhaps more than anything. The admission startles them both. Kai deflects by noting Paedyn is Kitt’s bride, but Kitt stresses that he is Kai’s brother, seeking reassurance that their bond endures.
Kai answers, “You and me. Always,” and they share a brief, warm smile before resuming the spar. Their movements slip into a childhood routine, a memorized sequence that feels tranquil amid the clash of blades, recalling years spent training together in the same ring.
When Kai jabs Kitt’s chest and the blow lands, Kitt fails to dodge and groans, breaking their trance. He jokes that this is why he is the king and Kai is his Enforcer, admitting he is not good at fighting his own battles. Kai urges another run-through, noting neither of them sleeps much, and they end on a bittersweet acknowledgment of their shared exhaustion.
