Fearless — Lauren Roberts
Contains spoilersSummary
In Ilya’s throne room, Ordinary survivor Paedyn Gray braced for execution for killing King Edric, only for the new king, Kitt Azer, to announce her as his bride and the figurehead of reforms to welcome Ordinaries back and reopen trade. Kitt framed the union as diplomacy to save a resource-starved kingdom severed from its neighbors. His brother, Enforcer Malakai “Kai,” secretly loved Paedyn and guarded her amid court hostility, even as Kitt advanced a sequence of public tests—the Trials of bravery, benevolence, and brutality—to force the court and people to accept an Ordinary queen.
Paedyn endured a lone crossing of the Scorches to the Sanctuary of Souls and retrieved the first queen’s crown, fought off bandits, and returned bloodied but triumphant. For benevolence, she sailed the treacherous Shallows to Izram with Kai, surviving mutinous sailors and a Plague-changed sea beast she killed by spearing its eye. Queen Zailah granted limited hospitality and later detected and neutralized Plague-laced roses sent from Ilya. Back home, Paedyn’s public stature grew, but grief and rage over Adena’s death pushed her into a fiery confrontation with Blair, leaving Blair scarred. The court then demanded brutality: in the Bowl, Paedyn faced a fighter who appeared to be Kai; she refused to kill him until, under a staged, savage exchange, the opponent forced her hand and died on her dagger. Locked away afterward, Paedyn learned Kai had been drugged—she had killed Mak, Adena’s lover, disguised by an Illusionist—an outcome Kitt orchestrated to cement her legitimacy.
Behind these spectacles, old lies surfaced. Through letters, sealed records, and Iris’s chamber, Paedyn uncovered that Queen Iris, a Soul, was her mother and Calum—both Resistance figurehead and royal Fatal—was her father; Edric had covered up Iris’s death in Paedyn’s childbirth, claimed Queen Myla’s already-born, extraordinarily powerful son (Kai) as his own, and weaponized the Resistance to corral Ordinaries. Calum, revealed as a Dual Controller and Mind Reader who had manipulated kings and cause alike, taunted Paedyn with her “Ordinary” birth before Kitt killed him to end his influence. Reeling, Kitt pressed ahead publicly with Paedyn’s marriage to stabilize Ilya, even as his health deteriorated from self-administered Plague dosing.
When Paedyn and Kai confronted Kitt in his study, he unveiled an imperial scheme: reopen borders to seed a perfected, man-made Plague through trade and turn all realms Elite, dismissing mass deaths as acceptable. He admitted exploiting Paedyn and the Trials and confirmed Izram’s roses were already laced. As Kitt moved to kill Paedyn, Kai intervened; their lifelong sparring patterns faltered, and Kai accidentally impaled Kitt with a fire stoker. Dying, Kitt confessed fears and love for his brother, pressed his ring into Kai’s hand, asked to be buried beneath the willow, and referenced letters explaining his unraveling from grieving son to Plague architect. He died in Kai’s arms; later letters laid bare his jealousy over Kai and Paedyn, his orchestration of the Bowl deception with Mak, the parade bombing distractions, and his increasing dependence on the Plague.
Ilya mourned as Kai and Paedyn preserved Kitt’s image for the people and learned from Healers that self-dosing had already doomed him. They buried Kitt under the willow with his crown, then uncovered final truths from Myla: Kai was never Edric’s son; Edric had married Myla to claim a powerful spare and mask Iris’s Ordinary childbirth. With borders to remain open and Ordinaries welcomed, Kai was crowned king, vowing to continue Ilya’s reintegration and to honor Kitt as the greatest king in memory while abandoning the Plague plan. In the courtyard, Kai proposed to Paedyn with Kitt’s ring; she accepted, and they wed in a small rain-swept ceremony beneath the willow among close friends, choosing love and reform over fear.
Years later, King Kai and Queen Paedyn traveled with their daughter, Kit, through the quiet trade city of Tando, reflecting on a healing Ilya where slums were restored and feasts welcomed citizens. Paedyn encountered Blair alive and scarred and chose peace, letting vengeance rest with Adena’s memory. In an epilogue beyond life, Kitt awakened in a void, chastened by Death and comforted by two star-like presences who promised to stay until he saw his brother again—an afterword to a story of love twisted by lies, reclaimed by truth, and settled into gentler futures.
