Chapter 14: Kai
Contains spoilersOverview
Kai Azer spent the day retraining Ilya’s forces to fight without abilities and integrating timid Ordinary recruits. After nightfall, he visited Paedyn Gray in her quarters despite the risks, and they navigated jealousy, secrecy, and Kitt Azer’s suspicions. Kai gifted Paedyn her father’s silver dagger, and the two reaffirmed their bond, with Paedyn assuring Kai he is not like his father and asking him not to say "I love you" yet.
Summary
Kai oversaw intense drills in the training yard, correcting Elites and ensuring soldiers practiced fighting without using their abilities. He noted the presence of anxious Ordinaries among the troops and separated them from taunting Elites until they gained confidence, focusing on rebuilding a cohesive force now that he was free from hunting Ordinaries.
After dark, Kai went to Paedyn Gray’s quarters, reflecting that her presence there felt both wrong and fitting. Paedyn quickly pulled him inside, warning that he should not be seen there. They shared an urgent kiss before Paedyn reminded Kai of the danger and her engagement to Kitt Azer; Kai teasingly moved the engagement ring to her other hand, momentarily lightening the tension.
Paedyn explained that Kitt seemed suspicious of her relationship with Kai and that she and Kitt would dine regularly. Kai’s jealousy surfaced, but Paedyn asked him not to push her away. Their conversation turned to the upcoming Trials, and Paedyn revealed that Kitt had told her two Trials would take place at the Scorches and the Shallows. Kai refused to say goodbye, insisting she would be fine, and echoed Adena’s old reassurance about goodbyes to comfort her.
Kai then presented Paedyn with a gift: her father’s silver dagger. Paedyn was overcome with gratitude, and the moment reminded Kai of the harm he had once caused her. Paedyn gently reassured him, telling him, “You’re not him,” distancing Kai from his father’s cruelty and the monster Kai feared he had become.
Their intimacy deepened as Paedyn repeated her assurance and hinted that he had left a different, deeper mark on her heart. Kai nearly confessed his love, but Paedyn asked him not to say the words yet, sharing that everyone who had said them to her was gone, and that she needed him more than the words. Kai promised it would take more than words to separate them.
They embraced, Paedyn holding the dagger as they kissed, symbolizing her feeling whole with the return of her father’s blade and Kai’s steadfast support. The scene ended with their resolve to remain together despite secrecy, jealousy, and the looming Trials.
