Rowan — 14

Overview

Returning to the lighthouse, Rowan and Dominic suppress the intimacy that briefly emerged between them, while Raff’s confession about grief, death, and loyalty pushes Rowan toward a deeper commitment to the family. Rowan’s intervention during the dangerous chimney work highlights Dominic’s fallibility as a parent and Rowan’s growing protective role. The chapter ends with the reappearance of the sinister female presence, showing that Rowan’s external suspicions are now joined by an intensifying inner threat.

Summary

After the crisis at the hospital, Rowan walks back to the lighthouse with Dominic and the children in strained silence. Rowan and Dominic both avoid acknowledging their kiss, and Rowan hardens herself because she sees that moment as a dangerous softening. As Rowan walks with Raff, Rowan asks about Raff’s injured arm and then turns to the blood he mentioned earlier, but Raff refuses to explain and tells Rowan to speak to Dominic instead.

Raff then apologizes for accusing Rowan of trying to seduce Dominic. The conversation shifts to Raff’s fear of being trapped on the island and his suspicion that Dominic may want to remain there even after the seeds are collected. Raff admits that when danger was closing in on him, Raff briefly did not mind dying, and that afterward Dominic’s voice felt like home; this makes Raff confront the fact that he still thinks first of his absent mother rather than the father who is present. Rowan frames this as grief, and when Raff says Raff will not leave Dominic, Orly, or Fen behind, Rowan realizes that Rowan also no longer intends to abandon the family.

Back at the lighthouse, the group tries to make the old fireplace usable because reduced power has left them constantly cold. Rowan arrives to find Orly inside the chimney helping clear it and immediately orders Dominic to pull Orly out, fearing soot and dust will damage Orly’s lungs. Orly is washed clean, while Fen and Raff go back to the chimney work. Sitting beside Orly’s bath, Dominic admits that Dominic keeps making mistakes and is simply not used to anyone calling them out; Rowan replies bluntly but also makes clear that Dominic has at least kept the children alive.

Rowan then withdraws to Rowan’s room and removes the dirty bandages that have become a kind of support for Rowan. Rowan checks the healing cuts and deeper wounds, especially the badly stitched injury on Rowan’s hip, takes antibiotics, and sits alone in the cold. In that isolation, Rowan senses the threatening female presence again, breathing at Rowan’s neck and filling the room. Rowan tells the presence that Rowan cannot protect the children from what they have done, then dresses, packs, and firmly resolves not to follow wherever that force is trying to lead Rowan.
