Dominic checks on Rowan after the difficult trip to the base and comms tower, worried that the effort has made her feverish or worsened an infection. Outside Rowan's door he finds Orly, who has been told not to come in but still wants to stay near her. Seeing Orly's anxious attachment makes Dominic ache with the fear that, no matter how hard he tries, he can never fully fill the absence of the mother Orly longs for; Dominic then forces himself to remember that Orly's need is not a rejection of him.

When Orly asks whether Rowan will leave if the radio is fixed, Dominic admits that he cannot repair it. Orly is relieved, showing that he wants Rowan to remain with them. Dominic sends Orly upstairs to sleep with Raff, trying to protect both Rowan's rest and Orly's feelings.

Dominic then enters Rowan's room cautiously, despite still distrusting her, because he feels responsible for her safety. He finds her asleep under the covers beside a candle, checks her forehead, and decides she is warm but not dangerously hot. As Dominic looks around, he notices a glinting object on the bed beside Rowan: a photo whose meaning shocks him enough to set his heart racing. Shaken, he closes the curtain before turning to leave.

Rowan wakes and watches Dominic in the darkened room. She immediately asks whether Dominic broke the radio and whether he knows who did; Dominic answers no to both questions. Rowan seems to believe him more than before, and some of her tension eases. When Rowan asks whether Dominic means to keep her trapped on the island, Dominic again says no, but he adds that, for everyone's sake, he wishes she had never come.
