On the silent Zodiac ride back from the southern hut, Rowan turns the evidence over in her mind. Hank's desperate messages, Dominic's secret cache of Hank's belongings, and the blood in the hut kitchen make Rowan fear that Hank has been murdered. Because Rowan cannot imagine another explanation, Rowan's suspicion spreads to the family around her, and Rowan starts to wonder if she is in danger too.

As the research base comes into view, Raff slows the boat when he spots another whale. It is a humpback, the species Raff most wanted to see, and Rowan restrains her panic when she sees how much the sight means to him. When a calf appears beside the adult, Rowan and Raff are briefly pulled out of fear and into delight, waving and laughing at the mother-and-baby pair.

The encounter deepens Rowan's sense of wonder and grief. Watching the whales, Rowan thinks about the men who once came to kill such creatures and cannot understand that kind of violence. Rowan tries to stay present because Rowan senses that this peaceful moment will not last.

When the mother disappears, Rowan's thoughts return to shore, where Dominic and the others wait on the headland. Rowan wonders how Dominic could possibly explain the blood and whether trust can be repaired after what Rowan has seen. Before Rowan can act on those fears, the mother humpback suddenly breaches beside the Zodiac, rising so close that Rowan can see every mark on its body. Realizing the whale will land on them, Rowan grabs Raff's hand, tells Raff, “It's alright,” and the whale comes crashing down onto the boat.
