Dominic — 7
Overview
Dominic’s bedtime visit with Orly reveals that Rowan has already begun quietly questioning the boys about Hank, pushing directly at the family’s secrets. Dominic tries to calm Orly, but his private panic and Raff’s watchful fear show that Rowan’s suspicions are becoming a real threat. The chapter deepens the sense that the household is bracing for a truth none of them can safely ignore.
Summary
Before bed, Dominic checks on his sons during the storm. Raff appears to be asleep after working the punching bag, but Orly is awake in bed reading by candlelight and makes room for Dominic beside him.
Dominic gently asks what Orly is reading and then tries to find out whether the day’s events have unsettled him. Orly first says no, but Dominic senses that something is bothering him and waits for him to speak.
Orly finally admits that Rowan questioned him that morning before they went to the boat. She asked whether Dominic and Hank had been friends. Orly answered no and now wants to know whether that was the right thing to say.
The question jolts Dominic. Internally, Dominic reacts with renewed anger toward Rowan for involving Orly, but he also recognizes that Rowan’s questions are pressing against a hidden truth that neither side is acknowledging. Dominic sees the encounter as part of a dangerous standoff in which someone will eventually have to admit that something is wrong.
Outwardly, Dominic reassures Orly that his answer was fine, pulls him close, and asks him to read the comic aloud so he will stop worrying. While Orly reads, Dominic notices that Raff is awake and watching them. The look Raff gives Dominic carries the same sense of looming disaster, showing that Rowan’s investigation is spreading anxiety through the family.
