Fen — 9

Overview

As Shearwater is stripped for evacuation, Fen watches Dominic carry his grief and tries to reassure him that they can build a new home elsewhere. A surviving albatross chick offers the family a brief sign of endurance and a painful reminder of what Rowan will never see. When the Salt family finally sails away, Fen's panic and the seals' farewell mark the emotional end of their life on the island.

Summary

More than a week passes while the ship is packed. From the lighthouse, Fen and the others watch helicopters shuttle cargo away and see a pump siphon the remaining diesel from Shearwater. The extraction leaves the island feeling stripped and violated.

During a brief moment alone with Dominic in the kitchen, Fen sees how deeply grief has worn him down. Dominic rests against the table Rowan restored, the only object he has chosen to take from the island, and Fen notices he keeps touching it. Fen tells Dominic they will find another place and come to love it, and when Dominic asks Fen to tell him anything and everything, Fen leans into him, trying to comfort him.

Later, Dominic, Raff, Fen, and Orly climb the mountain behind the lighthouse to check the albatross nest, though Fen fears what they might find. Instead, they discover a baby albatross alive in its nest, with both parents tending to it. The chick has survived the storm against all odds, and the family sits watching for hours until Orly quietly says that Rowan had really wanted to see it.

When the time comes to leave, the Salt family stands at the stern of the ship and watches Shearwater disappear into the distance. The last visible piece of home is the tip of the lighthouse, and Fen is seized by panic because she does not feel she has said goodbye properly. Then Fen sees the seals following the ship through the water, diving and lifting their fins as if offering a final farewell.
